If you're not dealing with VLANs or anything like that, pretty simple.
Just buy yourself a cheap one with as many points you need and go crazy.
If you get a GIg capable one, for home use, you really don't have to worry about much more.
Correct, a "dumb" switch will just let you plug into any port (except for the uplink, of course) for however many ports you buy.
