I was worried that Rasselas would be racist. But Johnson really loves his hero, and Wilhem Meister is a lot more passionate than I expected. And Johnson's language in his essays is very difficult, so I anticipated the same for Rasselas. But both books are very approachable for a modern reader.

I was afraid that they would feel so alien to my modern sensibility that I would find them difficult to stay with. I thought Rasselas might be abstract and an allegory and that Wilhelm Meister would be a story of rich German fops having affairs.

Reading 2 18th century novels at the moment: Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship by Goethe and Rasselas, Prince of Abyssinia by Samuel Johnson. They are both surprisingly entertaining.
