I try to take out the stigma of talking about these things by... well... talking about them. And supporting others who are talking about them.
As a society, we all are.
But it can't just be the people on TV. Or in your feeds. Or just me.
If survivor isolation perpetuates the #CycleofAbuse...
How we then have less freedom to be selective over who we lean on. So... what does that make us? Easy prey.
ALL OF THIS is even MORE exacerbated in #HigherEd... where power differentials are TOTAL.
These things keep me up at night. As one can tell... here I am posting after the witching hour.
In my memoir, The Burn List: A Memoir of Abuse from Home to Higher Education, I graphically divulge my own story.
But let's talk about what happens after that.
#LisaPhilips talks about how #survivors become isolated. How we seek empathy, and are not believed. How we are shunned and stigmatized.
That professor? He's now a DEAN. Yes, a dean.
What message does that send to every other student? Say no... and there's a price.
It wasn't long after that a different professor asked me to have sex with him. And asked what I was willing to do to get an A.
Said faculty member asks his student to have sex with him, and is told no. That student - a high achieving, collegial professional - is then 'reviewed' by that professor... at a regional conference. Called "vain" and "self obsessed" in public, by the very same professor he said no to.
True story.
In the dance department I attended, it was normal to see students running around naked. It was normal for faculty to drink with students. A professor could call his entire class of nearly all female students "bitches," without a blink. Because, we're all friends here right?
But what about when...
I watched #LisaPhillips, #Epstein survivor, interviews recently. And she talked about #HigherEd involvement, the vulnerability of those in #arts and entertainment, and the #CycleOfAbuse.
