Rifleman Sheldon Steel from Bramley died fighting alongside the US in Afghanistan. He was 20. That’s not avoiding the frontline - that’s putting everything on the line in the fight for freedom.
Following these remarks from the US President, I’m thinking of Rifleman Steel’s family and friends.

NEW: The government has launched a new national road maintenance rating system.
It’s great that Leeds has one of the highest ratings. There’s more to do. I report potholes in our community most weeks and have regular meetings with the Highways team to ensure repairs are done.
🌞 Great to be in Bramley Park for Breeze in the Park! Hundreds of local residents and families are enjoying the sun, stalls, games and inflatables. We were delighted to fund this again with our Leeds City Council Outer West Community Committee funding.
Tory cuts to our local budgets over the last 14 years have decimated SEND provision. They want us to forget what got us into this mess.
At Full Council, I spoke about West SILC’s fantastic post-16 provision and this Labour government's recent investments in SEND provision.

🌹 Grateful to the committed Labour activists who joined us on the Upper Reach Estate this morning to speak to residents about the issues that matter most to them.
We picked up several issues which we will be following up this week. Thank you to all residents who gave us their time this morning.
Our first Leeds City Council Outer West Community Committee meeting of the year is Monday 30th June from 1pm at Farnley Hall. It would be great to see residents there as we take decisions on funding applications for community projects, as well as decide on our local priorities for the upcoming year.
🥵 I haven’t done a parkrun for years but I came out of retirement for the 10th anniversary of Bramley Parkrun this morning.
🏃🏻♂️ A really welcoming group of volunteers, runners and residents. Thank you to everyone who makes Bramley healthier and happier.
Following ours and local residents' representations to West Yorkshire Police, a Section 61 has now been agreed and the Travellers will be moved on from Bramley Falls sports pitches today.
Our next steps will be to review the damage on the site, arrange repairs and look into preventative measures.
NEW: This Labour Government is extending free school meals to 500,000 more children.
Any child whose parents receive Universal Credit will be able to get free school meals.
This change will benefit many in Bramley, Stanningley and Rodley, saving families around £500 a year.

The new Community Committee includes Bramley & Stanningley, Farnley & Wortley, Calverley & Farsley, and Pudsey.

🇬🇧 A privilege to lay a wreath at the VE Day service in Leeds. As the Armed Forces Champions for Leeds City Council, we’re grateful to everyone who came together across the city to mark this important day.
🇬🇧 A pleasure to visit Ghyll Royd Care Home for their VE Day celebrations. It was great to meet residents, many of whom have served our country and put their lives on the line for our freedom.

Under the Tories, military homes fell into disrepair.
Labour is setting new standards, with better move-in conditions, more reliable repairs, and a named housing officer for every family.

👨🚒 At the meeting of the West Yorkshire Fire Authority People and Culture Committee this morning, I praised the work of Stanningley Fire Station in tackling the bin arson in Bramley Park.
Delighted that fire fighters attended Bramley parkrun to raise awareness of these issues.
