I have definitely pushed through on books recommended by people I respect. Usually turns out to be worthwhile but if it isn’t then I don’t go and post a negative review. I acknowledge it wasn’t for me.

Is hate reading a thing? I can see people buying a book, reading it so they can leave an angry review, then returning it for full credit. Do they not have enough things to be angry at already?
