An update on our model deprecation commitments for Claude Opus 3
Anthropic is an AI safety and research company that's working to build reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems.
Apparently even the people who work at Anthropic are suffering from AI delusions. Models don't have "preferences" because they are not alive. They only simulate the appearance of having preferences. I wouldn't ask my algebra homework what it wants for lunch.

Yeah. I actually just read the bill and I don't even see where it requires all aircraft to have ADS-B tracking. It only requires any airplane that's already required to have an ADS-B transmitter, must also have a receiver so they can receive the location of other planes.

That's just ADS-B which essentially all commercial aircraft already have. Commercial aircraft actually have better location tracking than the iPhone because not only do they have GPS accuracy generally down to 1-2 meters, but they also have inertial guidance still in areas where GPS is unreliable.

I think it would be interesting for some of the people who have a new favorite coding model every other day to actually do a blind test and see if they can actually tell the difference when they don't know which one they're using. Because I suspect there's a lot of recency bias coming into play here

Mostly functioning. I focus on things I can control and actually make a difference in and try to be intentional about when and how I consume the news instead of allowing it to invade all parts of my life. Otherwise Iβd spend all day feeling pessimistic and hopeless and thatβs not helping anyone.

I remember that being a selling point of the original iPhone too. They did a demo of being able to pinch and zoom on the full NYT homepage. Though it was pretty easy to outrun the renderer and see the underlying missing texture checkerboard pattern.

Honestly if it were 10 years ago and the subscription removed ads and all βsuggestedβ items from my feed Iβd probably have considered it.

Settings page in Dunkin Donuts app on iOS showing βNotification Settingsβ as an on/off switch that is turned on.
You canβt even turn them off. That notification switch is fake and just redirects you to the notification settings in the Settings app. So your only options are all notifications or no notifications.

Notification from the Dunkin Donuts app titled Hot Girls Hurry and advertising a collectible cup give away.
Why is Dunkin advertising this like an ad for a strip club? And why are they even advertising at all in a notification. Iβm pretty sure thatβs against Apples guidelines.

And even things that you'd think would be available aren't. Like I tried to buy DS9, VOY and Buffy on DVD. And all 3 of them ended up being single-layer low quality bootlegs.

I really hope buying physical media becomes a thing again. I feel like when it was common I was too young to afford it, and now that I can afford it and want it nobody's making it anymore. I recently went to buy Severance on Blu-ray and season 2 doesn't exist and season 1 isn't even in 4K.

the anthropic drama (tl;dr they blocked third party tools from using claude code subscriptions) is a useful reminder that you use LLMs at the pleasure of the companies providing them
sounds obvious but despite all the AI discourse, i don't see a lot of people talking about the consequences of this

Aw man π Rest in peace Mr Cheifet, host of Computer Chronicles: obits.goldsteinsfuneral.com/stewart-chei...
What a legend. His work in both presenting and preserving the early days of computer history has been (and will continue to be) deeply appreciated! My condolences to his family and friends.

I've had probably less than 5 main usernames over the almost 30 years I've been on the internet. So the idea that you would just accept whatever random username was given to you like this was 4chan or something seems very weird to me.

So I signed out and went to make a new account and apparently these username are all randomly generated by Reddit themselves? Why would Reddit want to make the site look like it's overrun with bots, and why do people not care what their username is anymore?

I noticed today that for some reason a bunch of people on Reddit seem to have very similar usernames like Adjective-Noun1234. At first I thought maybe they were bot accounts but their posts didn't seem like bot posts.

Like everything else with AI. It's only impressive if you don't look at it too closely, or if you just don't care about being beholden to perpetually paying some other company for code maintenance as a service.

The AI code works but it's a mess. There's like 2 or 3 different coding styles mixed together, multiple functions that do almost exactly the same thing, and whole swaths of code that never gets called because it doesn't ever clean up anything outside of it's context window.

I worry about what's going to happen to the code bases people will have to maintain if AI goes bust. I've spent the past week refactoring largely AI generated code because it bugged me that I didn't intuitively know how my own software was working.

Probably easier from a grading standpoint. When we were allowed to make our own conclusions it didn't matter whether they were well supported. It only mattered that we had the "correct" conclusion according to the curriculum.
