I am not interested in the audio drama but I can imagine they did something as subdued as "he was faking being dead" or "Eggman was covering it up"
I still believe the funniest way they could have brought Infinite back is long gone.
I would have done so in the story mode of a Mario & Sonic game and forced every single writer going forward to twist themselves referencing that every time Infinite popped up
