HOW did the deadly Sierra avalanche happen?
The 4-6+ feet that had fallen on steep slopes over the past 3 days was too heavy for a weak ice layer, meaning there wasn't enough friction holding the snow down. 50+ mph winds was enough to trigger slabs of snow to fracture and fall down the mountain.
