This thread is a great read!
When Americans were asked to temporarily sacrifice going to their barbers so we could keep the morgues from overflowing, people with guns stormed the Michigan capitol.
Cover art for Julie Chan Is Dead by Liann Zhang. A graphic design shows 4 rows of identical, simplified, cartoonish women with blonde hair, each holding a red cellphone. In the center of the 2nd row is a dark-haired woman holding a card with blue eyes on it over her own eyes, as if she is hiding her identity.

A black and white photo. A beautiful dark-haired woman seated at a table in front of dense, dark foliage. She is wearing a light colored shirt and is looking up over her left shoulder, her face lit by dappled sunlight.

A moody black and white photograph of some urban decay. A low graffiti-covered cement structure stretches out in a weed-choked plain, while a darkening sky looms above. A lone tree breaks the horizon at the left of the image.

I have a cabinet full of interesting spices and almost every imaginable peppercorn (not nightshades). I’m not a huge fan of Szechuan but I use it occasionally, especially in rubs. I’m trying to find long pepper which is reportedly much tastier than black pepper. Also Acmella (buzz buttons).
I’m a Cajun who found out in my 40s that I’m intolerant to nightshades. I had to get the blood out of my cayenne stream. I still miss Tony’s.
Zatar, which I love, doesn’t taste the same but the dark red kind of tricks my system. I use so much sumac and zatar now.

I thought the half-time show was ok. As a Louisiana native, the sugarcane plantation thing hit, but pop music isn’t my thing.
And that’s ok. Bad Bunny doesn’t need to speak to me. Not everything needs to be about me or for me. And there’s so much joy about the performance, which is great!
Photograph. A feminine face with messy red hair, green eyes, black lipstick, and green eye makeup. The subject stares at the viewer challengingly. There are peacock feathers in the hair.

A black and white photo. In the foreground, there several hospital buildings. Beyond that, the middle distance shows a small cityscape with skyscrapers. In the far distance is a hazy plane with snow-capped mountains rising under a cloudy sky.

I think often of the women in the Louis CK story—how they all left comedy and never went back, but he’s still going. It’s everywhere and it’s such a loss for them and for us—for things they’ll never make that we’ll never see.
We have to be nearing a corner. The local (SLC, UT) Fox station posted an article about POSOTUS wanting an airport named after him, and there are no comments openly supporting him. The most supportive ones claim that he’s trolling or joking.
This is seriously unprecedented.
I’m reading the side effects list on my new drugs and wondering if just going gently into that good night of menopause might not just be preferable.
I know, right?!
Received a Census “American Community Survey” form, marked YOUR RESPONSE IS REQUIRED BY LAW.
Barely 6 questions in, it’s asking for biological sex without even an option for intersex. The questions are transparently discriminatory and inappropriate.
This isn’t a survey. It’s a political tool.
The WSJ is reporting that there is a whistleblower complaint against Tulsi Gabbard that is so sensitive that is it locked in a safe and the administration can’t figure out how to inform Congress.
Important knowledge and truth bomb about my Cajun cultural heritage.

My poem from 2024. It just keeps getting sadder.
Courage is marching while keeping yourself and your peers safe as COVID, flu, and many other diseases move through the population. Wear at least a KN94, N95, or P100 respirator. Dead or sick comrades can’t march.
I want to see him do a duet with Jesse Welles!
