CNN seems to have changed the lede to be a little bit less weird, but the old one is still showing up in the Google summary for this story.

Another reason to dislike Lyon's football team if you ask me 🤷🏻♂️
The far right (and much of the mainstream elite) hate "the people" when they make their own choice
“The logic does not even hold. How do supposedly ‘sectarian Muslims’ end up voting for a radically progressive party with a gay Jewish leader?”

This article is very odd
There is no link to the definition which you would think matters and would be prominent
There is a claim that the definition "does not include a reference to race", it does
The article is framed around a reactionary talking point

Video screenshot from Reddit. Building is now a shell with flames visible in every window.
The roof has collapsed embers rise into the night sky.
The fire at Glasgow central station is utterly devastating. Shops, homes and our transport link to England are being wiped out.
I am amazed by the limited news coverage.
Curtis Yarvin * @curtis_yarvin X.com The Iranian Revolution was a diplomatic crime of the American left. The Islamic Republic, like its proxy Hamas, is a client power of the American left. Trump is only bombing Tehran because he can't bomb Brooklyn Kyle Orton @ @KyleWOrton • 20h The Shah's dream was to bring Iran up to a level with European States: the economic policies were in place, many social reforms done, and the political piece—an elected government with a constitutional Monarchy—was set for late 1979. Today I learned from JD Vance’s muse that Iran’s Islamic, fundamentalist regime is a manifestation of the same leftist political energies as those which animate Brooklyn leftism. Ok dude, sure, whatever
There have been many many flavours since unfortunately and no lesson is ever being learnt...
Smells like moral panic...
There is so much we need to be concerned with when it comes to AI and LLMs (as they exist) but I fear the negative coverage will be distracting and based on extreme behaviour as opposed to the more mundane and widespread harm

Good piece about a transnational trend in reactionary politics
Following in Murdoch's footsteps, we have seen countless reactionary billionaires building media empires, almost always at a huge loss
Profit is not the point, power is and weakened democratic institutions are unable to resist
If you are even remotely interested in populism, don't miss out the book launch of @emmyeklundh.bsky.social's excellent new book: Europe's populist condition
It's a brilliant addition to the literature which really unsettles many of the preconceptions about the concept and its potential

Indeed! Mine was the biggest lie and honestly...
Ooof, Elliott Smith should not be first on my playlist to start the day these days...
My guess is you keep across the news. You know Andy Mountbatten-Windsor has just had the worst birthday ever; that tall hotels in Dubai don’t make for a great holiday right now; and that Keir Starmer’s engagements diary for 2027 will be remarkably clear. Still, there is one headline I’ll bet you haven’t seen, even though it directly affects your life. It’s about your life, and mine, and those of our families and friends and neighbours. I didn’t spot it either, until a few days ago when the Guardian ran a reader’s letter. It came from Alan Walker, a retired professor at the University of Sheffield. Why, he asked, hadn’t this newspaper made more of the latest “shocking” figures on healthy life expectancy? I looked up the report from the Office for National Statistics, and he’s absolutely right: the findings are indeed “momentous”, and they should be on the front pages, because they expose a serious truth about the state we’re in
The intro is also damning about our media ecosystem and its complicity in the death of democracy (or anything vaguely resembling it)
Powerful oped, not just about public health but the state of our democracies:
"That’s real progress. Not GDP going up 0.1% or Rachel Reeves forecasting an extra couple of billion in fiscal headroom – but whether you live or die, are well or sick"

Just under a year ago, I provocatively asked in a title whether Starmer's Labour could be considered far right
Recent events, between Mahmood's appalling asylum seeker policy and Starmer's own appalling comments against Mothin Ali make it sound ever less provocative...

There are no lows Starmer is not willing to reach to in his attempt to please the far right and attack anything left of centre

😩
I know but it really annoyed me (this backlash, not your post) as I think it really misses the wider point
It concerns me as it'll allow many to pat themselves on the back and move on without enacting/demanding any real change
This to me ignores a lot of the wider issues I point to
Needless to say I'm not an expert, just fascinated (and terrified) by what I have read about it all (and experienced as a teacher and researcher)
So feel free to push back if I'm exaggerating
I'm not against AI or LLMs in and of themselves but I'm surprised at how the list above seems widely documented and yet doesn't seem to bother many people who are aware of it all
Am I missing something? Is it really worth it? Is it really just about ChatGTP or is it about a wider infrastructure?
If I understand correctly, AI as it exists has a huge environmental impact, is linked to reactionaries & the military, exploits workers and reinforces hierarchies, breaches copyright, "hallucinates", destroys jobs people want to do, fries our brains, destroys the internet, monopolises resources
