"We started a war of aggression for no reason & commenced it by accidentally bombing an elementary school & killing over 100 kids."

That simple fact is so horrific that it's just kind of bouncing on the surface of our collective consciousness. We can't absorb its full implications & significance.

I wonder what percentage of Americans knows that the CIA helped overthrow a democracy in Iran in 1953, installing a brutal dictator who tortured and murdered people. Republicans keep citing the 1979 Islamic Revolution as if that was the start of U.S.-Iran hostilities. Go back 26 years earlier.

Actually getting to the part where I upgrade my drives is somehow the most nerve wracking part

Picked up 2x14TB drives. One to add capacity and the other to let me move a healthy 8TB to cold spare duty.

if you’re cis and you don’t get it this is LITERAL TORTURE

it will result in dead trans people

and with their other goal of making us β€œsexually explicit” for existing

you see the pipeline right?

we exist -> we’re jailed for it -> we’re tortured and die

WE NEED YOU TO STOP THIS

This whole situation in Kansas is fucking horrific. Progress is not linear and anyone incensed by these gross violations of human rights has a duty to fight for the future they claim to support.

Trans rights are human rights. Period.

Firefox 148 introduces the promised AI kill switch for people who aren't into LLMs It's easy to activate, too.

Is it good when the most requested feature for a new technology is a way to turn it off? lmao

To do this, anti-trans lawmakers in Kansas moved fast to change the law, overrode the governor’s veto, and pushed for the legal changes to go into effect nearly immediately. That kind of powerβ€”to void gender on official documents, to compel gender conformityβ€”is terrifying and it will not stop here.

a digital collage with a pink, purple, green, yellow, and teal gradient overlaid on all the images. the images include a horse carrying a bucket, a cluster of mushrooms, a grub, a birds talon, a cicada, five spiders, two flower buds, a hand with an eye over the back of it, and a microscope slide of atoms. there is white text that reads "get weirder or die miserable." the background is black and there is a slightly grainy texture

Feed algorithms are widely suspected to influence political attitudes. However, previous evidence from switching off the algorithm on Meta platforms found no political effects'. Here we present results from a 2023 field experiment on Elon Musk's platform X shedding light on this puzzle. We assigned active US-based users randomly to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed for 7 weeks, measuring political attitudes and online behaviour. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed increased engagement and shifted political opinion towards more conservative positions, particularly regarding policy priorities, perceptions of criminal investigations into Donald Trump and views on the war in Ukraine. In contrast, switching from the algorithmic to the chronological feed had no comparable effects.
Neither switching the algorithm on nor switching it off significantly affected affective polarization or self-reported partisanship. To investigate the mechanism, we analysed users' feed content and behaviour. We found that the algorithm promotes conservative content and demotes posts by traditional media. Exposure to algorithmic content leads users to follow conservative political activist accounts, which they continue to follow even after switching off the algorithm, helping explain the asymmetry in effects. These results suggest that initial exposure to X's algorithm has persistent effects on users' current political attitudes and account-following behaviour, even in the absence of a detectable effect on partisanship.

A new paper shows that less than 2 months of exposure to Twitter’s algorithmic feed significantly shifts people’s political views to the right.

Moving from chronological feed to the algorithmic feed also increases engagement.

This is one of the most concerning papers I’ve read in awhile.
