I don't have enough time to post about this now, but I think the choice to equate "being a musician" with "being able to explain a 12-bar blues progression during courtroom testimony" and "being able to read sheet music" it undermines the author's argument (which I really think is interesting)

Fun side note, tuition for composition symposium is v affordable including daily sessions and recorded performance of work $650 and on campus housing at $75/night DURING WORLD CUP events in KCMO means you could save money doing the symposium vs staying in a hotel if all you care about is soccer

That was super fun! And I still think that children’s book setting is a great idea :)

I’ll admit I framed it as a β€œdisciplinary” activity somewhat tongue in cheek, both as a parent, and as a person that has wondered β€œwhy are we all taking a children’s disciplinary activity so seriously” aloud in particularly absurd moments

Prestige classical music is a completely different thing. I live in a part of the country where fiddle culture is significant. I think playing string instruments is enjoyable, but it’s hard to get people to engage if they don’t start as children. I’m not interested in the genius cult either

Not sure if I’m being misunderstood, discipline is completely separate from punishment of any kind…

08.03.2026 20:23 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I’ll speak from personal experience that I learned discipline through learning music, and many people I’ve spoken with have found the skills of practicing skills and goal setting are highly transferable. What motivates learning skill acquisition except something enjoyable? Social is a big part

Learning a discipline, teaching focus, goal oriented achievement. Sports, music, martial arts, dance, many other activities are often are framed as teaching β€œdiscipline,” the ability to work towards set goals and work as a team

I teach at a public university in a rural area, and most of the students we have either encounter string instruments in public school programs or in a local homeschool orchestra. Many students I teach haven’t had private lessons before and can end up as public school educators, or go to grad school

One of the great benefits that Classical training has for kids that not many other activities features is traditional necessity of 1-1 instruction with adult mentor, can be transformational. My personal feeling is this accounts for a lot of the extraneous benefits frequently cited in literature

08.03.2026 19:00 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

The truth is that it is really fun but the barrier for entry and necessary competence to enjoy it is very high, about on par with doing anything in a competitive way, like sports or video games, also essentially things that people train to do as children for leisure

08.03.2026 18:57 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

The fact that its identity and future are so tied to childhood training is a part of why it’s treated like a religion by many and is a para religious activity for many others, and people who don’t have this cultural experience as children are statistically very unlikely to see it out

08.03.2026 18:51 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

My feeling about Classical music is that it won’t be going anywhere as long as it is still highly regarded as a disciplinary group and solo activity for children. As soon as we stop teaching it to kids though it is dead, no hope of revival
