Image is a screenshot of a reasoned amendment to the Courts and Tribunals Bill. It is signed by SiΓ’n Berry, Hannah Spencer, Carla Denyer, Dr Ellie Chowns and Adrian Ramsay.
It reads: That this House declines to give a Second Reading to the Courts and Tribunals Bill because it is an inadequate and dangerous response to the challenges faced by the courts; it does not provide the correct solutions to the chronic backlog of cases in the Crown Court; it would not address the long-term underfunding that has led to the degradation of court systems, infrastructure and buildings; it would limit the crucial civil liberty and constitutional protection of trial by a jury of oneβs own peers by removing defendantsβ right to elect the Crown Court for all triable either-way offences; this change would cover a range of protest-related offences, and because protest rights and free speech, which act as safeguards against authoritarianism, have already been eroded by this Government and should not be limited further; jury trials build public trust and confidence in the courts and act as a space of shared civic responsibility that builds social cohesion; more effective interventions could be implemented that do not roll back fundamental rights, including expanding the use of βblitz courtsβ, increasing the number of sitting days, removing from the system cases that are no longer in the public interest to prosecute, increasing investment in legal aid, improving court case management technology, and bringing in more efficient processes to ensure defendants are brought to court and to the dock on time; and removing rights to judgment by oneβs own peers may have the unintended consequence of increasing court backlogs through a rise in appeals.
π¨We have tabled an amendment to reject the Governmentβs sinister attempt to remove jury trials including for many protest related offences.
Our civil liberties have already been eroded by this Govt and should not be limited any further.
Greens are standing up against Labour's toolkit for tyrants.

Image shows Sian Berry stood to the left of campaigner Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, and surrounded by a group of clean air campaigners. All of them are smiling and holding a copy of Ella's Law - the Clean Air (Human Rights Bill).
Image shows Rosamund Adoo-Kiss-Debrah sat next to Sian with a copy of Ella's Law on the table in front of them. They are both reading the Bill that is named in memory of Rosamund's daughter Ella who died aged nine due to exposure to air pollution.
Ellaβs Law has been published π
No child should have the growth of their lungs stunted because of dirty air where they live and play, yet this is the reality of air pollution in England. Ellaβs Law would change this.
My thanks to Rosamund and all the hard-working campaigners demanding change.

More than 1200 people have been killed across Iran, with many more injured and hospitals under attack.
No nation should be able to break intl law with impunity - civilians and healthcare facilities must be protected and those responsible for illegal attacks held to account.

Israel launches huge strikes against south Beirut after mass evacuation order
Residents fled Lebanese capital in panic before assaults on claimed Hezbollah targets while Tehran continues to launch retaliatory attacks
Israeli forces launching massive airstrikes in southern Beirut only hours after issuing an evacuation order for the over 500,000 people living there displays an utter disregard for civilian lives. We saw these patterns in Gaza - it cannot happen again in Lebanon.

Dear Shabana,
I notice today that you referred to me in your speech on immigration at the IPPR think tank.
You said: βA party leader should not be on the beaches of France encouraging people to
make a perilous crossing on small boats.β
I suppose I shouldnβt be surprised especially after the hateful Labour campaign in Gorton
and Denton, but this is just the latest in a string of lies peddled by a discredited Government
who intentionally fan the flames of racism and division.
When I went to Calais, I was not there to encourage people to travel to the UK. I was there
to see at first hand the suffering your Government and successive Governments have done
in demonising migrants in a pathetic bid to pander to the base instincts of Reform and the
flawed strategy of Morgan McSweeney.
As you will know, if you even bothered to research my visit instead of taking Reform talking
points, I was there to witness the brutality of families living in tents in freezing temperatures. I
filled water tanks and picked up litter.
What that visit did do is confirm my belief that if we are to smash the boat gangs and stop
the boats, we need to offer safer and managed routes for migrants to come to this country.
Showing compassion as a politician is not a crime. In fact, we need to see much more of it.
It reminded me of a young MP who in October 2015 spent three days in Lesbos helping
migrants fleeing war-torn Syria. She posted videos on X, talked about handing out water and
croissants to refugees and food parcels.
When she returned to the UK, she wrote a very moving piece in the New Statesman. She
said βwe have to work with our European partners and create new, safe, and legal routes for
refugees to get to Europe. We cannot abandon them to their fate, left as prey for smugglers
whilst risking death on the seas.β
She said βmaybe we can make ourselves feel better by saying no-one is making them get on
the boats. And again, the Home Secretary is not entirely wrong when β¦
Dear Shabana,
Let's clear some things up around migration and remember we're talking about people's lives.

The Chancellor met figures from BP, TotalEnergies and Serica in Downing Street.

With energy bills still driving cost of living pressures, it's senseless to cut taxes for highly profitable polluters, who already receive Β£2.7bn per year in tax breaks
