To be fair, the author does get themselves in trouble by listing "Country" among the things you can infer. I genuinely think they might have meant that as in "if you have a ZIP code you are in the US (or a US territory or holding)," which is true, but the text is confusing about it.

I think all the people complaining about the article about ZIP codes being parochial and US-centric are pretty funny, considering that "ZIP code" is a registered trademark of the United States Postal Service.
