Run into dried up thermal paste a few times. The crud they use in laptops often lasts only ~5-ish years, up to 8-10 if lucky. Laptops usually have direct-die so you need to be careful and it's a hassle but can be replaced.
Similar to older Intel desktop chips where the paste *inside* it goes bad.
