After several derailments and accidents involving the units, along with new equipment utilizing HEP, Amtrak decided to part with them by the mid 80s. Some were sold to ATSF and converted to freight power, and others scrapped. One, 644, is preserved today at the Illinois railway museum.

The EMD SDP40F was Amtrak’s ill fated first locomotive, built in the late 70s. It was shortsightedly equipped with steam heating, when that technology was being phased out. It also tended to ride rough on the poor track of the time. (Continued below)
