It is so frustrating that two of the apps that I rely on most on my iPhone—Safari and Mail—have turned into utter shit since iOS 26. So many rendering bugs. Half the time I can’t even get controls to scroll onto the screen in Safari. For the first time, I’m looking at alternatives. #iOS #ios26

Two penguins on a rocky beach looking at each other while one opens its mouth widely and looks like it's shouting at the other
A parent penguin on its rocky nest with two small fuzzy chicks under its belly
A penguin on a rocky Beach looking askew to the side
A penguin on a Rocky Beach leaning to the side with one leg raised slightly behind it and looking at the camera in a very amusing pose
I recently returned from an incredible trip to Antarctica and I need everyone to look at my penguin photos.
This is excellent and should be required reading in every high school civics class:

@vandal FYI, I’m considering moving my email from Rackspace to MX Route. MX Route seems to have a good reputation, and my pricing would go from $404 per month (using my new Rackspace price) to $20 per month.

I love the analogy comparing AI/LLMs in technology to the advent of tractors and mechanization in agriculture.
“This all feels familiar. I feel like the farmer standing in his field who knew his land and respected the place as my neighbor rips into the earth with the force of a thousand horses […]
Help me Madtodon: I’m looking for a service, app, self-hosted software, Linux command, or something else, that will periodically load a website and email me any changes that have been made since the last visit. The page structure is pretty simple, and it only needs to check once per week or so […]
Safari’s “Allow Website Tinting” option can’t be turned off in iOS 26 and my retinas are burning. What an awful feature. I think this is a bug but I hate it. #iOS #ios26 #iPhone
I got a new iPhone, which means I’m finally on iOS 26. Over all it’s not terrible, but it seems like everything was taken just a step too far. I’ve turned on “Reduce Transparency” and “Reduce Motion” in Accessibility settings, which seem to help matters. But really it just seems like they need […]
A black and white picture of a small, anxious boy with blond hair, sitting on a stony beach. At the top of the beach, on the grass, a line of cars is visible. The picture is on a Google Photos page, and at the bottom right of the page is a map which shows the exact location where the photo was taken -- and it's right.
OK, this is genuinely scary. It's a picture of me, aged 5. It was taken in 1960. It was scanned and uploaded to Google Photos in 2002. No one has told Google where it was taken. But the map, bottom right, is correct.
Obviously, in 1960, my father's pre-war […]

I gave myself the best Christmas present of all and fired a problem customer today. Now she’s demanding to speak to my manager. 😂

My father-in-law asked for tools this Christmas. He’ll never guess what this one is! #Christmas
Any recommendations for a MagSafe leather case for the iPhone 17 Pro? It’s time for me to upgrade.
My 80 year old aunt accidentally updated her iPhone to #ios26, and it’s really hard for her to use. It’s too different and too illegible. I probably can’t do anything about the “different” part, but I might be able to help with legibility.
I know about “Reduce Transparency” in Accessibility […]
Post from Vichy Twitter from some asshole named “alz”: “Books are obsolete. Books are just small containers for knowledge. LLMs are much bigger, more flexible containers for knowledge. Anything than can be done by a book can be done better by an LLM”. The ratio is 428 to 300.
Cover of “Learning Core Audio” by Chris Adamson and Kevin Avila. The cover image shows a young woman with strawberry blond hair and a pink hairband listening through over-ear headphones and staring straight at the reader. The side of the image cuts off her face halfway across.
When I was writing the Learning Core Audio book back in the day, AI wouldn’t have helped me because there was no Core Audio sample code out in the wild outside of two or three things from Apple in WWDC sessions or the docs. I wrote much of the […]

@nuthatch Now you’re thinking!
I think I just discovered why my office has been so cold. My Ecobee temperature sensor was sitting next to the exhaust vent for my laptop. The sensor thought the office was a full 10°F warmer than it actually was! 🤦♂️
@dmoren I’d like to buy a copy of “Tapper’s Day Off” for my brother-in-law as a Christmas gift, but I’m having trouble. I don’t think the story is available as a print edition (too short?), and I don’t think it’s possible to buy the Kindle edition as a gift for someone else’s Amazon account (is […]
My nephew did a great job splitting kindling once he got the hang of it. #Thanksgiving
Teaching my 12 year-old nephew how to split kindling. Welcome to Uncle Charlie’s work camp! #Thanksgiving
My Dad passed away in February, so this is the first Thanksgiving without him here. He was always the pie maker, but that duty now has passed down to me. The good news is that Dad did a really good job of keeping recipes at hand. The bad news is that some of his […]

@octothorpe You mean “The Star Trek Channel”?
Now, as I write this, we are on the train about 15 minutes from Milano Centrale. There we’ll catch a connecting train to Malpensa airport. We’re going to spend the night at the Sheraton hotel in the airport, then catch a morning flight home. Ciao! #travel
After our Grand Canal cruise, we grabbed lunch, then collected our bags and took a water taxi to the train station. The water taxi was a lot of fun. Ours was a beautiful wooden boat with an open section of roof that allowed us to stand and take in the sights during the ride. #travel
This morning, our last day in Venice, we got an early start and took that vaporetto ride down the Grand Canal that we missed upon arrival. It’s crazy to think that the entire city is basically built on pilings that were driven into the mud of a swampy river delta. #travel
We also toured the Doge’s Palace (complete with a walk across the “Bridge of Sighs”), the seat of power for the Venetian empire for a thousand years. #travel
