Dad, I'll miss you every single day of my life. You fought till the end and you will be with me forever. ❤️

To everyone in oncology and cancer research, myself included. Let us remember why we do this work. Let patients be the center of research and medical practice. Not an afterthought, not another paper, not just data points and data to be extracted.

There were exceptions: Dr. Alejandro (palliative care) and Martin (our nurse) never forgot their humanity. They saw my dad as a human being, not a file number, not a bed waiting to be emptied. This is what healthcare should be.

But we need institutional actions, not acceptance or normalization of a broken system. I think when stress and workload disconnect us from our purpose, we must speak up and demand change, not adjust to cruelty.

When did we become comfortable reducing human suffering to numbers, sometimes forgetting the Hippocratic Oath and putting profit ahead of patients lives? I know burnout is real. I know the system fails you too and lack of basic infrastructure makes it very hard.

Patients shouldn't be victims of a cruel system. To those in oncology: What was your purpose in choosing this path? How do we prevent the pressure of broken systems from disconnecting us from our purpose?

We navigated a broken healthcare system in Mexico, one that turns its back when patients and families need support most. Public sector: negligence, rude staff and burnout. Private sector: profit-driven care (mentioned by some oncologists themselves). Endless barriers.

Years ago I saw a post about Kaplan-Meier curves: beyond each data point are real lives, people and families in unimaginable pain. Now I have lived it first hand. I saw things in hospitals and cancer care units that I never imagined, that I wish I had not seen.

I lost my dad to stage IV prostate cancer. Christmas and New Year won't be the same. I feel like I could write a book about what I experienced, but I will just say this: patients are not data points. They are human beings whose suffering is real, profound, and shattering.
