I just entered Threads and read something that made a few brain cells volunteer to expire... No wahala. If we don’t kill off a few brain cells occasionally, new ones will not grow.

It would be lovely to see short examples of other direct translations to English and back

When the motive for murder in a crime drama is academic publication royalties, I cannot take them seriously.

Nigeria We Hail Thee Help us to build a nation Where no man is oppressed,

Nigeria had an old anthem, musically good, but lyrically contested. Then a new anthem that was musically questionable but lyrically ok. In 2024, FOR NO GOOD REASON, the old anthem became the new anthem and the new old. Both are in the post; which one do you prefer?

Most world languages=12 languages
Nigeria has >500
My state in Nigeria has c. 12
The African continent has about 1000.
According to Ethnologue, there are over 7000 distinct languages spoken in the world. That's before we get into the political debate about distinctions between dialects & languages.

Indeed! I think of this very often.

You are welcome. I have made that mistake more than once, so it was useful to have the question.

12.03.2026 12:55 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Sorry, inaccurate. >2000 languages in Africa. Though it should be noted that Nigeria accounts for approximately 15-20% of Africa's population; roughly 1 in every 5 or 6 Africans is Nigerian. West African language distribution is also more diverse than the rest of the continent.

Exactly! And the previous one did not need to go. It's not great, but we got used to it. And considering the musical legacy Nigeria has, there is no excuse for a rubbish national anthem. And if there really needed to be a new one, there could have been a musical competition staged or something. πŸ€·πŸΏβ€β™€οΈπŸ€¦πŸΏβ€β™€οΈ

I have no idea what is going on with that sheet music! As chaotic as the changing of the anthems!

12.03.2026 12:26 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I have always thought so. The criticisms were, firstly, it was not written by a Nigerian, and the line "Though tribe and tongue may differ" could sow division. Some people were also not happy with "motherland". That got changed to "fatherland" in the new, now old version.

Unless ofc it is a writer murdering the royalties dept after another "we can only send checks not digital transfers, and we encourage you instead to donate your royalties back to our endowed academic press that has not registered ur book for US copyright & doesn't care it's in the Anthropic data."

Dr Naomi Wolf, a feminist, asked AI the appropriate dress code for Muslim women during Ramadan…
In the context of Rama Duwaji (Mamdani’s wife) donning a crop top at official NY Iftar.

Non-Muslims are now dictating how β€˜modestly’ Muslim women should dress.
Is this the feminism we’re meant to uphold?

"Epistemic disobedience is…necessary because there is no way out of the coloniality of power from within Western categories of thought. Epistemic disobedience takes us to a different place...to spatial sites of struggles & building rather than to a new temporality within the same space." W. Mignolo

Lost in Translation Yoruba in its idiomatic purity lends itself to miscommunication

I laughed myself silly writing this years ago. It contains a paragraph translated directly from Yoruba to English with ridiculous results. But there is a deeper message here. Languages also express the inexpressible. Translation often needs a human mind and soul.
