When I joined as the head engineer of the Torment Nexus project, it was to work on fascinating technical problems and make the world a better place along the way. I am appalled to discover that the Torment Nexus would be used this way and, now that my options have vested, will be leaving the project

hot tub isn’t enough. I need to be ground down to a perfect sphere through 100 years of tidal action

This is true, and a key thing to reflect on: one can be agnostic about tech in the abstract, but this tech *doesn't exist in the abstract*. It only exists concretely, and do you imagine you'll have more control over its concrete expression than the wealthiest people in the world? If so, how so?

"This probably sounds like nightmare fuel to many, but to wealthy VCs and AI and crypto entrepreneurs it’s the next gold rush." is the quote of our time

Now every commercial regardless of subject matter but also including things that require thought or consumption is just like "Have AI do handle it for you"

And I think that is bad. I think we are being hit with a weapon.

I would argue they knew exactly what they were doing, which was deliberately sabotaging needed public works programs by offering snake oil they never had any intention of delivering.

AI is not inevitable. Nothing in human societies is inevitable because we design them. Healthcare can be free for the public. Books can be bought instead of bombs. Universities can be free for students, and they can even receive a stipend to live off. Don't let companies dictate the future.

Good.

This is appropriate. The reason those are licensed professions is that we recognize the danger of letting an untrained human dispense legal or medical advice.

That danger does not disappear when the advice is dispensed by an LLM. In fact, the danger multiplies

I think they might have better luck spending two thousand dollars holding a press conference where they detail who made the key decisions to collaborate with the Trump administration, how and when they were fired, and explaining what would stop that from happening again.

As I get older I’m coming to increasingly radical views like “eradicating peoples jobs is bad, actually” and “a necessary part of having skills is taking responsibility for the outcomes of those skills”

Can AI Replace Social Science Researchers? No. No it can't. Come on, now.

Karpf: "If you think Claude Code is a better social scientist than you, then you’re probably right. But that means, at some point, you stopped trying to answer interesting/puzzling questions and started trying to win the publish-the-most-articles race." davekarpf.beehiiv.com/p/can-ai-rep...

What does this imply for those of us who are not Christian, and who labor under the assumption that we're protected by the First Amendment?

The use of AI to identify targets (without subsequent specific human confirmation) should be considered a war crime.

And by that I don't mean "we should make a rule" I mean that straightforward application of the existing rules would tell you that it is a war crime.

Like, none of this is a secret. The planners at the DoD who are using this technology to make deadly decisions not only have blood on their hands, they should be put on trial for negligent homicide, for war crimes. It is an outrage that they are so careless with civilian lives.

I keep seeing posts about ai models like "actually they're good at this thing now!"

but once you understand that ai tools are being built by fascists in service of attacks on humanity, whether or not they can generate useable code or do basic searches kind of stops being the main question

never, ever, ever, ever accept "how will you pay for it?" as an argument against social programs.

What's scary about this story is the surveillance it hints at. This trans woman had changed her name, legally, but chose not to change her gender marker. She was apparently flagged in the DMV system as trans and her license was invalidated under a law that supposedly only concerned gender markers.

my neighbor told me SAMs keep eating his fighter jets so I asked how many fighter jets he has and he says he just goes to congress and gets a new fighter jet afterwards so I said it sounds like he's just feeding fighter jets to SAMs and then his taxpayers started crying

It's always "trying to bring about the rapture" and never the part of the bible about eliminating all debts.

If they were really serious about biblical teachings all loans (including credit card debt) would be wiped at the end of seven years

Newcastle pubs ban AI art from breweries to protect local creatives As two pubs in Newcastle ban AI art, artists discuss the impact it can have on creatives.

"If I was to use ChatGPT for my designs rather than our designer Sean, that's taking money out of the local area into the hands of a multibillionaire ... removing value from the local community and local artists [and] into the hands of some of the richest people in the world."

If you breach copyright to make publicly funded research publicly available they'll come at you with everything. If you turn theft into a business model investors can profit from, they'll change the law for you.
