While people feel the foundations of their lives are shaking, this deep crisis will continue | Clive Lewis The partisan debate since the Gorton and Denton byelection risks blinding us to the truth. People are rejecting wholesale the way our politics has developed, says Labour MP Clive Lewis

By far the best analysis I’ve read post-byelection from anyone in Labour.

For all its problems and diminishment, the BBC (particularly the World Service) remains one of the best institutions in Britain.

The DCMS consultation on the charter remains open for a few days. Have your say here:

Cruelty to immigrants is not what my party stands for. It’s time for True Labour, not Blue Labour | Stella Creasy We must get back to the party’s roots before it is too late. That means embracing difference, rejecting division – and fighting for opportunities for all, says MP for Walthamstow, Stella Creasy

"There is an alternative way forward: being True – not Blue – Labour. True Labour doesn’t fear those who are different. Instead, it demands everyone contribute their abilities to society – and works to unlock such skills."

I was, of course, joking.

Do you think this was not "by hand"? (Hard to tell. I'm pretty sure some of it was; might all have been.)

And surely it used an (Apple) pencil?? Or do you mean a dead-tree "analogue" pencils??

Maybe this is a digital deep fake hallucinated infographic.

What a world.

'People, ideas, machines' II: catastrophic thinking on nuclear weapons Western theories re Soviet 'rationality' and nuclear strategy/ deterrence were revealed post-91 to be overconfident & wrong... Few realise... The rot of the UK nuclear enterprise...

Not sure why I’m looking it up for you, but the same basic story is here from the man himself:

Not saying you should believe Dom, but it’s primary.

I don’t think he said.
Bound to be Cumming, probably on his blog.
But I don’t know.

Whatever you think about Dominic Cummings, he takes nuclear weapons very, very seriously. And he absolutely believes it is a subject that not only publics don't spend enough time thinking about, but politicians don't spend nearly enough time thinking about. And he has written about his shock and outrage at just the ignorance of British politicians about the strategic questions, the technological questions.

They don't understand the technology, they don't understand the strategy, and they don't understand the history. The story is that when Boris Johnson became Prime Minister, his chief advisor, Dominic Cummings, was horrified by Johnson's ignorance. And so he arranged a three-hour briefing in Downing Street with leading military figures, strategists, historians and others, trying to fill him in.

You are now responsible for this arsenal, and you need to pay attention. And to signal to Johnson that you need to pay attention, he took his phone off him, because he knew that Boris Johnson couldn't spend 10 minutes without checking WhatsApp. And he thought the only way to get him to pay attention was to take his phone off him.

So he took his phone and he locked it outside the room, and he made him sit through three hours of this. And according to Cummings, at the end of this meeting, Johnson was white, the blood had drained from his face, not with horror or shock, but with fury at Cummings for taking his phone off him. And he came out of the room and he said, ‘Never fucking do that and never fucking waste my time like that again’.

Apologies for my language, but if you want to be scared about the world we live in, there's a story to make you scared.
