From 2011 to 2023, there were only three years in which trawlers were above the Western Alaska chum salmon cap the North Pacific Fishery Management Council put into place last week. Average trawl bycatch of Western Alaska chum salmon during those years was 46,995.
The trawl industry is patting itself on the back for accepting a bycatch "cap" of 45,000 Western Alaska chum salmon β but that's barely below what they've been catching, on average, in recent years.
There will be a short program, followed by a film screening, a Q&A session, and door prizes will be given away.

Ocean Conservancy and the Alaska Marine Community Coalition just released a report analyzing the trawl fleet's much-hyped studies of their "economic benefits."
Their findings? Most benefits of the billion dollar industry leave Alaska.

We need meaningful action and reduction of bycatch, not more studies.
Take action on chum bycatch: buff.ly/lHVnRUO
Alaska's fisheries and coastal communities are already feeling the consequences of unacceptable levels of wasteful bycatch and seafloor habitat destruction. More research will not stop the loss of salmon, halibut, and other vital species or prevent further degradation of critical ecosystems.
Alaskaβs Congressional delegation has introduced the Bycatch Reduction and Research Act β a bill that will fund more studies, give trawlers money for technology that reduces bycatch and bottom contact, and prioritize technology used for monitoring and reporting.
