The 1933 Long Beach earthquake occurred 93 years ago today, beginning near Huntington Beach and rupturing north for 15 miles to just north of Long Beach. It cause strong shaking through much of the Los Angeles region. with the worst damage in Long Beach and Compton.
The 3/10/1933 Long Beach quake killed 120 people and brought home the dangers from unreinforced masonry buildings. It led to the first seismic provisions in the building code and the passage of the Field Act that ensured strong seismic safety measures for public schools.
Did you take them the 1872 earthquake scarp in Lone Pine? If not, they can’t complain about hearing about too much geology.

The wildflowers in Death Valley were near peak for this year and amazing. Here are a couple of closeups of some of the varieties. Plus, a hungry sphinx moth caterpillar which were everywhere happily munching on the vegetation.
The only good thing is that this year my internal clock is already messed up from waking up at 4:30 every morning this week to catch good photography light in Death Valley.

I just got back from Death Valley and will post some photos from a really great trip in the coming days. For now, here are a couple of shots of Mono Lake tufa towers I took early this morning on my drive back home. It was cold (18 degrees F) when I pulled into the lot but had the place to myself!

Field days are the best. Today I had the opportunity to attend the Taber Foundation Drill Class in Capay Valley. The class has live demos of geotechnical drilling & sampling techniques for students. CGS’s Sr. Geotechnical Engineer Chase White was one of the instructors on the mud rotary rig.
