DHS to states: Follow our voting rules or lose out on election security money The Trump administration has tied new requirements to election security grants. Some states told NPR they're passing on the grants as a result.

The article reads: “The potential withholding of funds over policy differences — combined with other recent election security cuts — has many wondering whether the [administration] is prioritizing election security the way it claims it is.”

Election fraud = Large-scale illegal actions that intend to manipulate an election outcome, broader in scope than voter fraud: more systemic/election-wide, could be undertaken by individuals or organized groups. Examples: Ballot stuffing (adding false ballots), tampering with voting machines, altering or discarding ballots, changing election results. Voter fraud = Lone operators casting illegal ballots, isolated incidents that are ballot-specific, undertaken by individual voters. Examples: Casting multiple ballots in one election, voting under an assumed identity, voting in the name of a deceased voter, voting when/where ineligible to vote.

Distinguishing between voter fraud and election fraud is critical for identifying potential problems, responding appropriately, and protecting election integrity.
