It does, but there's a whole bunch of compression options and some of them are very jpeg-y.
I usually use squoosh.app for that, 'cause they let you fiddle with the options and see their effect directly.

Sometimes I like putting a shadow over everything, then erasing it to "paint in" where the light would hit.
I dunno if it's faster, and it's probably nothing revolutionary, but it's easier for me to wrap my head around it this way.
