A Child Cruelty Register will help protect children from heinous physical abuse. Congratulations to the inspirational Tony Hudgell & Mum Paula & Helen Grant MP. Many thanks to @jessphillipsmp.bsky.social & @jakerichardsmp.bsky.social for listening & making it happen

A Child Cruelty Register will help protect children from those that commit heinous physical abuse.
Delighted to play a small role in delivering this with @jessphillipsmp.bsky.social. But the heroes are Tony Hudgell, and his mother Paula.
They inspire all of us. π

Alcohol misuse is a root cause of reoffending that blights our communities.
So we are investing in alcohol tags and community measures that will help turnaround lives and cut crime.
I went to the pub to watch @Fraser_Knight get drunk to test their effectiveness. π
βWe were crushed by the horrorβ but βIβm a survivorβ
Gisèle Pelicot speaks to #Newsnight
But our modernisation agenda will build a youth justice system which reflects and meets the complex needs of children today β keeping our streets safe, reducing reoffending, and cutting crime. Back to work!
There is more to do - on criminal records, the youth court system, legal representation, diversion orders, support for children in care, safeguarding in custody, use of technology and AI to focus reduce and better understand the root causes of offending. And more!
And weβre backing this up with Β£320 million of funding for youth justice services over the next three years.
For the first time in decades, we are offering long term financial certainty for youth justice services. More details in policy statement π

Iβve also asked @Rachel_deSouza to look at how we improve education provision in Youth Custody. The current provision, despite the dedicated staff, is not fit for purpose - and we need to ensure child offenders get access to the skills they need to turn their backs on crime.
There is much more to do to tackle knife crime, though. And in the coming weeks, weβll be making further announcements working with brilliant Education and Home Office colleagues.
Designed by youth justice services, these plans will focus on the childβs needs and help them turn their back on crime for ever. Children could receive intensive mentoring or support to remain in education or access to healthcare.
Whatever it takes to prevent offending.
We are also determined to dramatically reduce knife crime.
Our new policy means every child caught with a knife will now receive a tailored mandatory plan to tackle the roots of their offending, whether thatβs exploitation by criminal gangs or childhood trauma.
We know targeted prevention schemes can really help young people turn away from crime.
Iβve seen the brilliant work of our Turnaround Programme. More than 90% of children who took part avoided future police cautions or court. Thatβs why we are investing in it for the long term.
Yesterday, @DavidLammy and I launched the beginning of the biggest transformation in Youth Justice for a generation.
Our youth services already do fantastic work, but to ensure we protect the public and reduce reoffending, we need the system to evolve.
Ratcliffeβs comments are offensive to those who come here to contribute to our economy and public services.
We share the publicβs concern about immigration; thatβs why we have reduced numbers dramatically.
But we must be united in this challenge, not seek to inflame and divide.
Good response to Jim Ratcliffe's appalling comment on immigration.
@jakerichardsmp.bsky.social: "Jim Ratcliffe has moved to Monaco to save Β£4 billion worth of tax in this country, one might question whether he is the patriot that we need to comment on this issue."
Knife crime is down under Labour. But as we have tragically seen this week, there is much more work to do.
Today, weβve announced new measures to ensure early, rapid and rigorous intervention for children found with a knife.
This will make our country safer and save lives. @lbc.co.uk
The Tories suggest our Prime Minister should not visit China. Wholly unserious.
A sensible and pragmatic relationship with China is in our national interest.
The Prime Ministerβs visit was a welcome reset. π¬π§
Conservatives = 500 prison places in 14 years. π¬
Labour = 3,000 in 18 months. πΉ
Unless Iβm hallucinating, Labour is delivering prison places to keep our country safe. Fixing the mess the Tories created. π
Todayβs Prison Capacity Statement reveals the truth.
Without Labourβs prison building and sentencing reforms, our law and order system would be in crisis. Criminals left to roam the streets. Victims abandoned.
Reform & the Tories are not credible in opposing our changes. π
Really enjoyed my debut on Any Questions - thank you for having me on.
It was important to welcome Nick Timothy to his role replacing Robert Jenrick as Shadow Justice Secretary.
I hope he learns the lessons of his predecessor and adopts a more thoughtful approach. π
Indeed - huge credit to @charlotte2153.bsky.social
At the heart of our changes to the justice system is bolstering protections for victims.
We are announcing plans to ensure all victims get free access to sentencing transcripts.
An important win for brilliant victim groups campaigners

Yep
Yes, I mentioned that in my speech!
More credibility if the Shadow Attorney General wasnβt also currently working for Roman Abramovich
Opening of the Herbert Chapman plaque in Kiveton Park - what an honour!
Even as a Spurs fan, remembering this Arsenal and Kivo legend with some of his family members was just brilliant.
Remembering the past, but also investing in football across South Yorkshire. β½οΈ

Great to start the day speaking with Emily and Amelia, who are in the final of a local talent competition!
They are brilliant, and took me through their plans for preparing for the big final in February! Good luck - youβll be fantastic.
