She watched it rise past the layers of dreams that drift from bodies while their soles arch into soil, step after step, and while youth carelessly bargains itself to myth. She knows not where it went, but on quiet nights when the cicadas sing and the sky opens to a milky rivulet of invitations, she senses it, and it senses her.
