Love this! It doesn't take much money or infrastructure to make our streets much safer for people.

Needed:
1. Put people’s safety first.
2. Recognize drivers follow road design, not road signs.
3. Accept that faster traffic means less human activity in a neighbourhood.

Make Way for the β€˜One-Minute City’ While the β€œ15-minute city” model promotes neighborhood-level urban planning, Sweden is pursuing a hyper-local twist: a scheme to redesign every street in the nation.

Saint John is closer to a β€œone‑minute city” than we think. Union is waking up; Lansdowne already hums with daily life. The problem? We still design for cars, not people. Imagine if we flipped that script on a few key streets.

Hey, when every study tells you to do something people don't like, just study again. It's only safety, fairness, and access to daily life for some people. No big deal. #peoplecity

Build walkable, liveable cities and as a bonus you’ll get children giggling as they commute to school/daycare by sled.

Prioritizing cars over people is brain dead stupid.

"Giving so much space to cars also precludes other businesses setting up in the immediate vicinity. The result is that most of the economic value of games is captured by the team, with local merchants getting less of a slice"

What fuel will ships burn as they move toward net zero? This is Part 3 of a short series on efforts to decarbonize the global shipping industry. Part 1 addressed international policy and politics, Part 2 efficiency measures. This part looks at alternative ...

Container traffic through #SaintJohn could hit 800K as ship activity ramps up in the centre of our city. With the shipping industry facing big fuel changes, it’s key that #netzero is treated as a real opportunity, not just by industry, but for clean air here in our #peoplecity. Here's what’s next...

Smaller cities mean better buses and regional railβ€”not bullet trains. A Canada wide strat for people centered transport is needed. #peoplecity

Saint John may some day soon need to do what Australia did during its Millennium Drought and plan for desalination from the Bay of Fundy, powered by renewables of course, to keep our water secure if/when dry conditions linger.

New electric-powered locomotive designed for harsh winters unveiled near Edmonton | CBC News A new battery-powered locomotive designed to take on the frigid temperatures found in Canada was shown off at a railyard in Strathcona County on Wednesday.

"...battery range will not be an issue for the new locomotive, as its job will be to handle short-distance railcar switching operations." Sounds like NBSR sologi.co/4n8CGys

Our neighbourhoods would appreciate these more than the new fleet of diesel NBSR has planned.

Paris makes streets for kids and neighbours; meanwhile, @govnb.bsky.social too often only sees infrastructure and budgets, not how people live.

Until the province has its own urban strategy, can it ever be a competent partner for cities? #peoplecity

Back to school time!

Drop-off + pick-up at our kids' elementary school in #Montreal used to be a dangerous rodeo.

This year, we got approval for a rue-Γ©cole (school-street).

Closed to carsβ€”open to people.

I explain how we did it in this weekend's Globe:

Agreed.
Parking mandates force developers to build more parking spaces than needed, wasting land, increasing construction costs, and ultimately making housing and businesses more expensive.
Ending parking mandates is good for small business.

🚨 Saint John, NB: Why pass laws forcing every home to finance parking for SUVs & pickups nobody needs? It’s nonsense, as demonstrated by Denver. Stop making housing costlier for a myth that everyone drives. Homes > parking spots. #PeopleOverParking #SaintJohnNB πŸ πŸš—βŒ

"lower speed limits and smart design"

Hold on a second, drivers aren't responsible for either of those two things.

Before you blame users for how they use a road, take a close look at how the builders of the road designed it to operate. #safedesign #peoplecity

Can cities just replace parking spots with trees?

One borough of Montreal has been experimenting with quick, cheap implementations of this for greenery, shade, and water management.

But there’s been controversy due to losing parking and the fact that it doesn’t look as polished as bigger projects.

Why does Saint John require a 200m buffer for shelters and tent sites, but only 150m for heavy industry? We’re saying people needing shelter are a bigger threat to our neighbourhoods’ quality of life than factories. What does that say about our priorities?

Main Street project fixes decades-old errors in key Saint John route | CBC News An upgrade of Main Street and the viaduct in Saint John will give the city its first protected bike lane while correcting problems that date back to the days of urban renewal in the 1960s.
