I'm teaching a John Jeremiah Sullivan piece tonight in my class and rereading it, I can't stop thinking... we need more of this kind of journalism. More writers given the freedom to play on the page, to report big weird cultural stories, to immerse themselves. The talent exists, the funding does not
i know that this is an unpopular take, but everyone starting their own newsletter as a revenue stream is not a sustainable model for writing and reporting or for people who love and want to pay for media.
"The team even re-created the scent of Christian 'Hell' as described in 16th century sermons, including notes of sulfur and brimstone and a whiff of 'a million dead dogs.'"

Why am I never on this site, it's great. Substack has been turning nasty lately and this seems like a nice respite. (I can only handle one social media app at a time, apparently.)
Oh, thank you so much for reading and linking! I really enjoy your work in The Atlantic. Your 2024 piece on whale civilization is something I think about often.
I love old photos so much and it's always heartbreaking to see vinegar syndrome win. Neat story by @katykelleher.bsky.social

This is great - Iβve been thinking a lot about this too, as a member of the extremely failed Gen X - how can I teach my daughter to do better and also literally survive in this new fucked up world www.thenation.com/article/poli...
βWhen I read about the ingredients used in perfumery many thousands of years ago, Iβm always struck by how consistent our preferences have been.β

Late 18th century stickpin in 15k gold capped with the head of a monkey carved out of mottled green malachite. He's got cabochon ruby eyes and a bright-eyed and bemused expression.
I know everything blows and I'm literally trying not to cry 24 hours a day. But here, look at this cute little ca. 1790 malachite monkey pin.
