The Legend, a 13' (4m) male great white shark, curiously approaching my camera rig.

On this particular day, The Legend came right up to my camera with his snout multiple times but never made contact. The electrical fields given off by my rig are a potential cause for this curiosity.

Cal Ripfin (aka Shredder) was one of the most photographed white sharks at Guadalupe from 2001 to 2011. His curious nature around divers made him an ideal subject for photographers at the island.

Sadly, he has not be seen since the end of 2011.

Andrew Thomas is one of Guadalupe's male great white sharks.

Guadalupe's white sharks are assigned names through the White Shark Photo Identification project and naming rights are often granted to those who contribute to the project, whether it be financially or volunteer work.

During the brighter part of the days, I shoot with lower exposure, because the highlights will get blown out at higher exposures, so those photos tend to have a lot more contrast in appearance.

He is missing the top portion of his caudal fin, which helps make him easier to identify.

Sad Face is a male great white shark who was originally named for a superficial wound that resembled a "sad face" emoji.

Fortunately for Sad Face, white sharks have remarkable healing abilities and that injury healed up completely, even though he's still stuck with the name.

Side by side comparison of two photos of Schloss Neuschwanstein shot from the MarienbrΓΌcke over 40 years apart by a father and son.

My dad found some of his old Schloss Neuschwanstein film photos last week. The top photo is one that he took in 1982. The bottom photo is one I took 2023.

Both were shot from the MarienbrΓΌcke, which constrained us both to similar vantage points, but I still thought it was cool.

Sparkles is a female great white shark who was first documented and identified at Guadalupe in 2021. She was the 413th individual white shark identified through MCSI's Guadalupe White Shark Photo Identification project.

The project is now on hiatus due to the travel/dive ban at the island.

A small remora can be seen hitching a ride on Mikaela's right side. She also has pilot fish companion swimming above her just below the surface.

Brutus, a male great white shark who also happened to be the face of Shark Week 2024's advertising, was sporting an injury just behind his jaw on his left side in 2021.

Brutus also has permanent injuries to his upper right gill slits, which gives them a "scalloped" look.

I've often heard Scarboard, an 18' (5.5m) female great white shark, described as looking "prehistoric."

She's definitely got her own distinct look, whether you think she looks like she's a relic from the past or thing of beauty from the present.

While sharks do not actually express mood via facial expression, I still like to tell myself that this guy is happy.
