Chris Murphy: "I Just came from a two hour, closed door classified briefing on the war. It just confirmed to me it's totally incoherent. We are not gonna be able to achieve any of our stated objectives ... this is a disaster of epic proportions, a 10 day debacle"

Boy, 7, dies of brain condition caused by world’s most contagious disease — years after he had it as a baby Even those who make a full recovery from the initial infection face a lurking threat: a deadly disease that remains latent until striking — and killing — years later.

California boy dies of SSPE (measles complication) after being infected at age 7 months, when he was too young to be vaccinated.

Long-time buddies Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols were out for a pleasant van drive in Oklahoma when, all of a sudden, their lives would change.

Pretty amazing how Mississippi and W Virginia were able to maintain such high rates with mandates, despite their politics. I think the exemptions avalanche had been a key part of our problem over the years. Misinformation plus official permission=shitshow

the discourses on here about what public health workers should or should not do is pretty disconnected from the evidence base, expert consensus, and broader reality of that work. and most current PH workers have been driven off social media due to harassment, censorship, or just being way too busy

the problem is the misinformation getting piped into everyone’s screens + lack of political will to fight anti-vaccine policy/legal attacks. public health cannot fix these issues alone. need politicians to lead

this really runs counter to the actual history. the policy response has been to strengthen laws like mandates the last three decades, & comms have gotten more effective over time, not less when you look at the *actual* campaigns being run.

Using cryo-EM, we captured five structural intermediates of the Nudaurelia capensis omega virus (NωV) as it matures from procapsid to infectious virion. It's incredibly exciting to see the complete maturation pathway of a eukaryotic virus described at this level of detail.

Hot off the press!

I'm thrilled to share that our paper "Unravelling the Maturation Pathway of a Eukaryotic Virus through Cryo-EM" has been published!

This is the thing. The quiz is just asking people if they like a snippet of art or a snippet of a derivative of art. It’s like asking someone if they prefer a line drawn by Picasso or a line drawn by a computer trained on Picasso and the works of the people he influenced. It doesn’t mean much.

Narrow straits have been death traps for warships since the invention of cannons. The Navy is very good at shooting down missiles but they’d have almost no reaction time in the Straits. There’s a real chance of losing one of the escorts, which would be a humiliating disaster

The evidence—which gets stronger by the day—points to a zoonotic origin

Yet lab leakers STILL accuse Fauci of “causing” Covid🤯

The new study “represents another nail in the coffin for theories invoking laboratory manipulation”; the new data are “what we would expect from a natural zoonotic event”

Public health people tend to be very, very nice. They want so badly to build trust and show what good things can come from their work. But antivaxxers are well funded and organized and they will never be satisfied by evidence or scientific fact.

Also. Consider all the ways security tech in the home can be weaponized against you by abusive partners (many of whom are responsible for the stalking to begin with!)

Home security systems are safety theater. They make us feel like we’re in control, but they don’t actually reduce the risk of violence.

If anything, they’re a part of a broader, predatory industry that exploits our fears and *increases* the risk of violence to keep us spending money.

After revelations that companies like Ring have been selling home security footage to ICE, the most common defense of keeping a camera up seems to be, “But what if I’m stalked?”

And as a violence researcher, I’m just here to state for the record that police do not care about your security footage.

The Kyoto sakura spotting was a lovely surprise as my expectations with regards to seasonal flowers were more along the lines of plum blossoms, of which I did see many, including at Kitano Tenmangu. ⛩️

(Honestly, I actually felt intoxicated by the sight of all those flowers...!!)
