Being an ACIP member used to mean you were at the top of your field. Now the bare minimum is "this shitty paper didn't actually get retracted but everyone can see it's awful."

Ridley’s most notable career accomplishment was to be personally responsible for the first run on an English bank in over a century.
And his advocacy on behalf of atmospheric carbon dioxide is most likely a consequence of the fact that he is heir to a coal mining fortune.
‘Beijing now recasts past Hong Kong political mobilizations as national security threats, even including those that were seen as legal under the Basic Law at the time, providing justification for its hardline turn’.
Contrast this with all the disaster relief contributions that Hong Kong made to (Mainland) China over the years/decades that the Chinese appear to have forgotten.
Oil trading like a freaking memecoin over the last 5 days is really something
I witnessed this firsthand in Hong Kong when for a period of 2.5 years, the regime simultaneously imposed both a mask ban *and* a mask requirement.
The more you peel back dictatorships, the more they look the same:

ah yeah, China, famously not using AI or facial recognition for any kind of surveillance
That sound you’re hearing is dozens of shipping insurers taking their phones off the hook and just leaving them there for the next few years
China's consulate in Strasbourg pressured a French theater and city officials to cancel a Taiwanese play that simulates the opening of a Taiwanese embassy. The theater didn't budge. Read the latest from Lingua Sinica: linguasinica.substack.com/p/the-play-c...

Just once I'd love for one of these MAGA dupes to admit the fault with getting duped by the lowest-rent con man of the century lies with them.
there is a playbook for this, and they threw it out just like they did with the pandemic
"But you'd have to be a subliterate, brainless, incurious, uninformed moron with the mind of a small child to think that's how the world works." Yes, have you not been paying attention to LITERALLY EVERYTHING THE PRESIDENT DOES AND SAYS, IN PUBLIC, ALL THE TIME, FOR A DECADE
Sun Tzu (D-NY) - “When your enemy is making a mistake, fix it for him at great cost to yourself.”
Bottle of Joint Support chews from Millionaire Mutts. The obviously AI bottle lists among its ingredients “Clucosa Wine” and “Chomppotth” From Waglabs.co
Most supplements are bullshit, but some are more bullshit than others. This is from a website that until a couple of days ago was selling Cyclosporine (for itch!) without a prescription. Better to stick with the Clucosa Wine and Chomppotth as those have excellent safety and efficacy records 🤔
Public health is a wild field to be in because when things go right, people assume we're not doing anything useful, and when things go wrong, people assume it's our fault.
This pattern dates back to the beginning of public health.
"Each person plucked from their day-to-day existence left a whole life behind. There are shoes by the front door and an empty bed. There’s a car in the driveway and a job undone. There are pets that need feeding, bills that keep arriving and leases with months left to pay."
Not for nothing, but this broader dynamic of neither being able to safely discuss real organising, nor being able to silence doomers and other morale-destroyers, is exactly why social media is *not* generally a useful tool for activism, much less an indispensable one.
You cannot, nor *should you* say, "actually, at my org, we're [REDACTED]," so the despair-posting has even freer rein.
But there has been enough press coverage of real acts of resistance (for which people have literally died) to make clear that the American people are not going quietly.
One of the challenging dynamics about social media is that it is categorically stupid to talk openly about meaningful anti-government organising, but then that leaves a vast space for the doomers to fill up with "why isn't anyone doing anything!?"
Is that image meant to evoke goatse for everybody on here?
Chris Murphy: "I Just came from a two hour, closed door classified briefing on the war. It just confirmed to me it's totally incoherent. We are not gonna be able to achieve any of our stated objectives ... this is a disaster of epic proportions, a 10 day debacle"
California boy dies of SSPE (measles complication) after being infected at age 7 months, when he was too young to be vaccinated.
Long-time buddies Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols were out for a pleasant van drive in Oklahoma when, all of a sudden, their lives would change.
Pretty amazing how Mississippi and W Virginia were able to maintain such high rates with mandates, despite their politics. I think the exemptions avalanche had been a key part of our problem over the years. Misinformation plus official permission=shitshow
the discourses on here about what public health workers should or should not do is pretty disconnected from the evidence base, expert consensus, and broader reality of that work. and most current PH workers have been driven off social media due to harassment, censorship, or just being way too busy
the problem is the misinformation getting piped into everyone’s screens + lack of political will to fight anti-vaccine policy/legal attacks. public health cannot fix these issues alone. need politicians to lead
