Hedgerows & Willow Tits ~ A thread

Carmarthenshire holds more Willow Tits than any other county in Wales (Wotton, S. 2022). Looking at satellite maps of the county, it’s clear to see the potential for these birds, with areas of suitable wooded habitats, interconnected with unmanaged hedgerows.

Incredible ringing recovery this AM by Stour Ringing Group of a Kestrel caught near Arne which was carrying a Dutch ring and a sat-tag. Well done for getting the data so quickly. Amazing movement for a bird that typically isn’t considered to move large distances. @dorsetbirdclub.bsky.social

Reminds me of alder wood a few days after sawing. I wrote about that recently and despite searching long & hard couldn't find a definitive reason. It's probably due to exposure of polyphenol oxidase to oxygen. In combination with other compounds it appears to be a defence against various pathogens.

#birdoftheday Canary Island Kestrel. A distinctive race of Common Kestrel. Seems very common here on Gran Canaria. In my experience they hardly ever hover. The ones here at the JardΓn BotΓ‘nico Viera y Clavijo were feeding on insects.
