Still incentivizes you to EV train and such in the main games if you have them, but also provides a theoretical lower barrier to entry for the competitive scene.
Cosmetic monetization feels obvious. I suspect there'll be save data bonus outfits for the mainline games, though.
My guess is they'll have a limited currency for editing PokΓ©mon stats which you can either earn or buy. Freemium makes some degree of sense for this.
The only inkling we have is that it might be built on the bones of a cancelled game called PokΓ©mon Rodeo, which was a pseudo-Monster Hunter title where you ride on the backs of certain PokΓ©mon. Nothing's set in stone, though.

The big Game Freak leak from last year mentioned a joint multiplayer project codenamed Synapse. That's what this seems to be teasing, as the image is of synapses within the human body.
We still don't know what the gameplay looks like, though.
