β€œwanting to be a shitty person and hanging out with other shitty people and then being surprised pikachu when they are shitty to you” really is the perfect summary of the modern right

The California Coastal Commission is a totally underrated villain in this story.

LA applied for coastal development permits in 2022. It took 2.5 years of delay before they were finally approved. Had permits been issued that year, Park's predecessor would've been in office & it would've been built.

I cannot stop laughing at this absolutely delusional timeline! As noted in the report, just getting Coastal Commission approval will take at least a year.

You know what already has Coastal Commission approval? THE 100% AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECT PLANNED FOR THIS PARKING LOT

Karen Bass could have short-circuited this nonsense any time in the last 3 years by having the agencies & commissions run by her appointees issue needed clearances/permits in accordance with the law. Instead she’s letting one of the worst NIMBYs on the Council kill 120 funded & approved apartments.

Certain dudes are still upset with me when I said in 2012 that here in the US, being a straight white male is living on the lowest difficulty setting of life. From here on out I'm just going to refer them to these DOGE staffer depositions, and then tell them to go fuck themselves.

I always like to remind people that, while stuff like healthcare is stupid expensive, we could come very close to solving homelessness for $50 billion a year

β€œMultifamily housing is for young renters and the poor while single family homes are for established adults with children” is a really pernicious folk theory about how housing markets should work that I think is foundational to so much bad housing policy at all levels of government.

If you get into a β€œwho can cut taxes more” battle with the GOP, you’re going to lose because they are far more shameless and antagonistic to the idea of living in a functioning society.

Don’t concede to their framing that taxes are nothing but a problem to be solved.

The obvious wisdom and effectiveness of Housing First is obscured by the fact we've made "a tiny, no-frills apartment" an expensive status symbol in huge swathes of the country by creating an artificial housing shortage

Fondly recalling the 2010s, when one could borrow money for free and instead of densifying our cities and building electric-powered mass transit, we pretended Uber rides would always be cheap and worked hard to prevent "transit-oriented gentrification."
