The Shape of the Thing Where we are right now, and what likely happens next

I wrote about the exponential improvement path of AI, the early signs of massive transformations in the nature of work (including software companies where nobody codes any more), and how one week in February was an omen of our future as things get weirder. open.substack.com/pub/oneusefu...

This is probably not correct. Some said that PRC also reserved 026 for Taipei, but this was not verified officially either.

Did you know your MacBook has a sensor that knows the exact angle of the screen hinge?

It’s not exposed as a public API, but I figured out a way to read it and make it sound like an old wooden door.

Now out in Sociological Methods & Research

We argue that one of the most important use cases of generative LLMs for social scientists is transforming unstructured content into structured data.

Our article shows how to do that — and what can go wrong.

Lost and Found: The Unexpected Journey of the MingKwai Typewriter | Made in China Journal It began as an innocuous inquiry on Facebook. Nelson Felix, a resident of New York State, posted in the group ‘What’s My Typewriter Worth?’ about a curious find he made while clearing out the basement...

The lone long-lost MingKwai typewriter, invented by Lin Yutang in 1947, has resurfaced in a NY basement. How did it get there? Where might it go next? The journey of the groundbreaking invention embodies the search for modernity and Chinese identity. My latest:

I would recommend DEVONthink for PDF management: www.devontechnologies.com

For academic writing in Markdown, Pandoc or Quarto are great choices.

If you are visiting the United States, having a negative view of Trump is enough to get you denied entry.
If this was coming out of Russia or China, we would deplore such an authoritarian attack on freedom of expression.

Building an Academic Community for China’s Quantitative Historical Databases - CNKI

I had the honor to be invited to contribute an essay for a section on 数字人文与史学发展 in 廣東社會科學. I focused on the development of a community among those constructing and analyzing historical Chinese databases. The issue is now out. 1/2 oversea.cnki.net/kcms/detail/...!

Actually it lasted three years (6 semesters). The screenshots were selected ones that I still kept. Other than those, the teachers (usually 辅导员) also released some notifications and rules in the class. We also needed to learn some important events, like 中共二十大, 改革开放四十周年 and then presented by groups.
