Prince William is leading on housing policy — not by accident, but by intention.
We’re choosing smart solutions over slogans. Local action over waiting. Results over rhetoric.
It’s taken years of community input, industry engagement, legal work, and policy innovation to get here.
And it’s all rooted in one belief:
🏡 Everyone deserves a shot at living where they work, serve, and raise a family.
That’s why our proposed ordinance is so significant:
📍 We’d be the first locality in Virginia to put this new state law into action
📍 We’re setting a precedent for counties across the Commonwealth
What makes § 15.2-2305.1 different?
🔹 It offers more local flexibility
🔹 It avoids mandates that don’t fit rural or suburban areas
🔹 It encourages incentives, not penalties
🔹 It opens the door for innovation
But in 2020, the General Assembly passed a new law: § 15.2-2305.1.
This created a modern framework for affordable dwelling unit ordinances — and made it available to all Virginia localities, not just a few.
Most of those were adopted under § 15.2-2304 or § 15.2-2305 of the Virginia Code.
Some of these laws only apply to a few select counties and cities — mostly Northern Virginia jurisdictions with specific population thresholds.
You might be thinking:
“Don’t other Virginia localities already have affordable housing ordinances?”
Yes — but they’re operating under older, more limited laws passed back in 1989.
We’re making Virginia history.
On June 3, Prince William County could become the first locality in the state to adopt an Affordable Dwelling Unit (AfDU) ordinance under new legal authority granted by the General Assembly. 🧵
We've spent 5 years laying the foundation for housing that works for everyone in Prince William.

Now we're voting June 3 on a first-in-Virginia AfDU ordinance.
