Can ChatGPT help analyse public health data?
A new study by Swiss TPH explored this question through a randomised controlled trial with students and researchers, using ChatGPT to conduct an epidemiological data analysis as a tool or an addition to R/Stata.

The autumn semester @unibas.ch is about to start and we are looking forward to welcoming 25 new PhD and 62 new MSc students at @swisstph.ch. About 1/2 of our students are from abroad, many from the Global South, creating a unique diverse atmosphere and many opportunities to learn from each other! 🌍🤗

Le Swiss TPH suit la mortalité liée à la chaleur en Suisse pour l’Office fédéral de la santé publique (OFSP) et l’Office fédéral de l’environnement (OFEV).
De nouvelles données du monitoring sur la mortalité liée à la chaleur montrent : En 2024, environ 326 décès ont été attribués à la chaleur – moins que durant les deux étés précédents, en 2022 et 2023. L’été a été le sixième plus chaud jamais enregistré en Suisse, surtout au sud du pays.

Das Swiss TPH führt das Monitoring der hitzebedingten Todesfälle in der Schweiz im Auftrag des Bundesamts für Gesundheit (BAG) und des Bundesamts für Umwelt (BAFU) durch.
Neue Zahlen aus dem Monitoring der hitzebedingten Sterblichkeit zeigen: Im Sommer 2024 waren etwa 326 Todesfälle der Hitze geschuldet – weniger als in den zwei vergangenen Sommern 2022 und 2023. 2024 war der sechstwärmste Sommer in der Schweiz, mit besonders hohen Temperaturen in der Südschweiz.
The findings highlight the health impact of heat and the urgent need for protective measures.
Swiss TPH monitors heat-related mortality in Switzerland on behalf of the Federal Office of Public Health @bag.admin.ch and the Federal Office for the Environment @bafu.admin.ch.
Rising temperatures & more frequent heatwaves are a clear signal of #ClimateChange – and pose a risk to public health.
New figures of the heat-related mortality monitoring show:
- In summer 2024, ~326 deaths were attributed to heat – less than in 2022 & 2023
- Summer 2024 was the 6th warmest in 🇨🇭

Routine testing for Legionella in hospitalised pneumonia patients leads to faster diagnosis and better-targeted treatment – says a new study led by Swiss TPH.
The findings also underscore the need to promote shorter antibiotic treatment in line with national guidelines.
