Well all prehistoric monuments are the same aren't they?

Little is left of the cairn at Pierowall, Westray #Orkney, due to quarrying, but this ornately carved lintel stone did survive. Discovered in 1981 by a digger driver, it has similar carvings to those in the Boyne valley tombs, #Ireland. It is on display at the Westray museum ๐ธ mine.

A pile of Harry Price biographies and autobiographies.
When you send an email to some folks in Leeds that begins,
"I know what I'm about to write is going to sound crazy, but I'm really hoping you might be able to help me..."
... you know you're back in Harry Price Land. ๐

Greyscale diagram of northwestern Europe with arrows detailing movement and interaction of material cultures linked to Bell Beaker and Corded Ware around the Rhone-Rhine corridor.
I put this figure of Needham's model of a Bell Beaker/Corded Ware fusion into PowerPoint, and I kid you not the auto-generated caption was 'Map of the Battle of Brexit'.

16th-century watercolor illustration of Stonegenge by Lucas de Heere, made for an early guidebook for England. Watercolour painting of the Stonehenge monument with the surrounding ditch. A person id depicted lying on a green hill in the foreground. Another person stands by one of the stones and anoth (slightly our of proportion) rides a horse in the middle of the stones.
The Age of Stonehenge: 8th lecture down, 2 more to go. Today we covered the Early Bronze Age, how tin and copper mining in Britain and Ireland possibly drove the development of the Bronze Age proper across Europe, and how this enmeshed Britain births the ultra-blinged 'Wessex Culture'.

What a fantastic photo.
Belated Happy Birthday too, Toby.
Hope you had a great day

Photo at night looking down a long hall with vaulted ceiling and stone flagged floor. It's very gothic. Arches and columns are on both sides.
Moody night photo of a gothic exterior of large hall, taken side on, showing finials and a large bird sculpture silhouetted against a dark cloudy sky.
Back in Cambridge again for the final #ExcavatingGarrod project meeting (on this grant at least!), with Emma Pomeroy and @toriherridge.bsky.social
See now these people aren't confused or baffled because they are "researchers" not archaeologists.

La Guillotine blond, 8.5%. Triple-fermented. Very dry, reminiscent of Duvel but the hops overwhelm everything. Slightly sour, metallic aftertaste. More IPA than Abbaye. Not a fan. Great label though. 4.8/10

There was nothing quite like the spectacular Dun Carloway broch on Lewis when I biked to it in 2024 ๐ฎ
This well-built double-skinned drystone tower must have been a bewildering sight to any hillfort builder of the south. Extraordinary!

Photo in mono of a large gothic style window, looking out onto old rooftops.
Photo of wooden panels with graffiti carved in. One says POTTER 1860. Another says R. BARKER.
Photo of low-lit graffiti on wooden windowsill. An apparent date 1777 is visible.
Photo of a lot of graffiti in different hands on a windowsill. Names and dates but not easily legible.
๐๏ธ Happened to spend a couple of hours working in Charles Darwin's old school room today. Wooden panelling absolutely covered in children's graffiti, hope someone's done research on this!

For #FindsFriday this gorgeous depiction of the Deskford carnyx by Keith Henderson in Piggottโs Scotland Before History, 1958.
Found c.1816 Near Deskford, just south of the Moray coast, it dates to the later 1stC AD, deposited in a bog c.2/3rdC. Now in the National Museum of Scotland.

Prof Aidan OโSullivan,
โI would propose that a way of honouring [Viking Dublin dig] would be to ensure that National Museum is properly resourced in terms of staff & facilities to enable people to truly start to tell the incredible stories that are there in the collections and archives.โ

Such a great picture this. I particularly like the bloke having a wee in the tower, the really drunk bloke being held up by the gate and the bloke at the bottom with the massive loaves of bread on the back of his horse
