East coaster now in beautiful Utah. Pfp is late, lamented Toby. Although he thought he was a dog, he was the best cat ever.

Even if, like me, you have psycho MAGA senators and reps, it feels good to call and waste their staff’s time.

Older couple came in the bar tonight. They had some drinks, had some oysters, decided β€œwhat the hell, we’ve never had caviar before,” seemed to have a nice time. As they left, I was folding napkins in our lobby. Wife walked ahead, husband stopped to chat.

Downtown D.C. is one of the few urban districts in the country where congestion pricing makes complete sense.

- the street grid is fully constrained from further expansion
- bike and mass-transit access is plentiful
- congestion during commuting hours is excruciating (see below)

The data center rebellion is here, and it’s reshaping the political landscape As the buildout of AI infrastructure alarms communities, it is fast emerging as a potent electoral issue across the political divide.

Of note is how this is a potent wedge issue between Trump voters and the administration’s favored donor class

I think this story is a really good example for people to look at when it comes to understanding bias at NYT. It's not that the reporter, Dana Rubinstein, says anything outright false. But the framing, word choices, etc., add up to an unprofessional and biased account.

Governor Kay Ivey on Tuesday announced that she has commuted the death sentence of Charles L. Burton to life in prison with no chance of parole. Mr. Burton was convicted and sentenced to death for the 1991 capital murder of Doug Battle in Talladega, Alabama.

As required by law, the governor first reached out to a representative of Mr. Battle’s family. She also notified the attorney general. Governor Ivey’s letter to Alabama Department of Corrections Commissioner John Hamm is attached.

Governor Ivey issued the following statement:

β€œI firmly believe that the death penalty is just punishment for society’s most heinous offenders, as shown by the 25 executions I have presided over as governor. In order to ensure the continued viability of the death penalty, however, I also believe that a government’s most consequential action must be administered fairly and proportionately.

β€œDoug Battle was brutally murdered by Derrick DeBruce while shopping in an auto parts store. But DeBruce was ultimately sentenced to life without parole. Charles Burton did not shoot the victim, did not direct the triggerman to shoot the victim and had already left the store by the time the shooting occurred. Yet Mr. Burton was set to be executed while DeBruce was allowed to live out his life in prison.

β€œI cannot proceed in good conscience with the execution of Mr. Burton under such disparate circumstances. I believe it would be unjust for one participant in this crime to be executed while the participant who pulled the trigger was not.

β€œTo be clear, Mr. Burton will not be eligible for parole and will rightfully spend the remainder of his life behind bars for his role in the robbery that led to the murder of Doug Battle. He will now receive the same punishment as the triggerman.

BREAKING: Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has commuted the death sentence of Charles "Sonny" Burton to life in prison. Burton was sentenced to death for the 1991 murder of Doug Battle but did not kill Battle; the man who did later had his death sentence commuted.

Ingredients of an All-Natural Banana This visualisation has a short story behind it. I usually care too much about food labels. If something has monosodium glutamate (E621) or high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in it, I’m probably …

I'll see your scary chemicals and raise you a terrifying… banana.
