an installation art piece in a room. colorful fabric objects, painted wooden pallets, and microphones.
we being so (2025) Till the Teeth A n act of embodiment through sound, space, and presence, this multimedia installation considers how bodies and frequencies shape a room, its narratives, and the rituals it conveys. Objects once full of life disappear into the hands of speculative remembrance. Interactions with objects serve as windows into cultural memory, testimony, and the layered histories embedded within a household— resonating with the experiences of immigrant and itinerant families. By sonifying these relationships, the work explores sound as a means of self-determination and meaning-making, tracing connections between land, displacement, fragmentation, and communal memory. Audience participation is integral, as movement and being actively shape the evolving site. Through collaborative exchange and interaction, the work unfolds as a fleeting yet intuitive resonance, where sound becomes a site of belonging, adaptation, and transformation. Till the Teeth is an interdisciplinary art collective founded by Jonathan Rodriguez and Sandesh Nagaraj. Engaging sound, movement, and visual media, their work spans performance, sculpture, and multimedia installation. Grounded in the cultural and contested landscapes of the U.S.-Mexico border and southern India, Till the Teeth serves as a lens for framing sonic and spatial ecologies, using improvisation, ritual, and metamorphosis as central methodologies. Their practice embraces a rasquachismo ethic-making do with available resources-alongside experimental approaches that interrogate the boundaries of music, performance, and art-making. By activating found objects, field recordings, and reimagined instruments, Till the Teeth explores sound as an unpredictable, ephemeral, and communal medium for resistance and adaptation.
wednesday, 6/18: i'll be reading and performing new/improvised works at @jackstraw.org in conversation with till the teeth's "we being so." 7pm, don't be late.
an installation with two pink turntables, a white box, hose, and records
INSTRUCTIONS TO VIEWERS 1. Put on the headphones. 2. To interact with the piece, blow into or through the white tube using the mouthpiece, or squeeze the bulb on the black tube. 3. If the needle is at the very center of either of both records, carefully reset the tone arm to another position on Side A. 4. Repeat from step 2. ASPIRÉMONOS is a multichannel sound art installation that projects trans joy as vital function and vital force. Using processed recordings of breath from 20 people, the piece constructs a lifeworld where trans joy can be expressed and shared through the act of respiration. The installation responds to the act of breathing as a form of viewer interaction for further symbolic exchange. Using turntables with built in speakers and digital audio playback on headphones, the installation provides a cyclical, aleatoric experience. The viewer interacts with the installation through the breath (or "breath") of the viewer, which modifies the sounds and vibrations used to produce the composition and the piece in its entirety. 1. Think of a time another trans person made you feel trans joy. 2. Start recording. 3. Inhale audibly, as you if breathed in that bliss when you felt it. 4. Exhale audibly, as if you were sharing your breath with someone else to spread that exuberance. 5. Let that breath become a sound that radiates the joy. 6. Stop recording. 7. Thank the person who made you feel that joy. This work was manifest by the breath of: Al Pastries, Alexandra Hardwick, Anonymous (x 2), Ashley Seward, Atlas A. Lee-Reed, Billy Sigil, Bridget, EGG, Eve Vickers, Genna Joy, Hope Salmonson, Madeleine, Mariló, Ro Shapes Tickle, Sarah Hennies, Serena Hommes, Swerv, Yelahneb Unicornucopiax, and Yvonne.
