Stormont’s indefensible and unannounced policy of censoring declassified documents more heavily than in London Top NIO man’s name and blunt comments censored for no justifiable reason, as officials admit they now engage in new policy of blacking-out names they don’t recognise — despite MLAs never approving suc...

After finding a declassified government file in London which wasn't censored as it had been in Belfast, I investigated the reason - and found Stormont is now undertaking extreme censorship of these files. That means we'll understand NI's past less fully.

Me: (Listening happily to the Wolves Liverpool 5th Round FA Cup tie, on BBC Five Live.)

Mrs Will: And do you need a big radio like that to listen to the football?

Me: 😳

Bullied myself down to a local wildlife reserve by the sea yesterday with an HF mobile rig and a 14mHz vertical for the car roof. One mother of all POTA pileups later, I was so glad I’d taken the trouble. Delighted so many ops called in. #pota #hamradio #amateurradio #fun

Really strong! Just worked them.

Thanks for mentioning this. Just tried it there on the Quadra and it’s fine 👍🏻

Oooh. Might take a look. All cocky now, talkin’ big…

And it works really well! Thanks again.

Brilliant. Thanks very much!

Yes I was awake at 5, genuinely thought about getting up, dithered about for a bit and then slept until 0830!

No one to blame but myself.

So my Ubuntu-skilled friend who does this stuff for a living, came round. Raised his eyebrows a lot for 5 minutes. Then put a # directly in front of the new line in /etc/hosts and said “There. That puts you back. Wait until the clever people sort it. Then take the # out.”

All working as before.

Thank you for this Hubert. I installed it and had to go. The legacy option works fine. The open hamclock option… Couldn’t get it to work. Which port should I use?

Well, I find that oddly reassuring. So thanks! It shows it isn’t a problem with the hardware per se, rather a bug or series of bugs. I agree, I am going to let the guys get on with their work and wait until there are widespread signs that it’s all working.

Ach wick.

I have a friendly Unix expert
Coming ‘round tomorrow night. Price of a pint and he’ll take a look at. Kicking myself for not waiting until June

Worked out deleting configs from this:

25.02.2026 14:15 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 3 📌 0

Didn’t work. So I deleted the config files. Reinstall from the quadra ham apps installer. In the apps-hamradio menu. Now works but clicking in VOACAP DE-DX crashes it. Hmmm

25.02.2026 14:11 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

Well it lasted a few minutes and clicks and crashed again - just trying a reinstall now.

25.02.2026 13:19 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

Yes I went for a full reset and I’ve not got it running stable again. It clearly wasn’t about my desk being full because it tells me it’s at 22%.

So I guess I am back to plan A but at least we are running again - until June.

I wish I understood Linux systems.

Since I made the changes as described - mine now crashes within seconds of starting up. Bruce suggested a memory overload issue - but cannot seem to fix it.

It was so nice to have a dry afternoon for once that I went outside, parked the car in an open space, put on my 3xmag mount, fired up the RigExpert and tuned my new 17m and 10m Ampro monobanders to a gratifying low swr. Bit more POTA happening soon.

Made me happy.

I drove 120 miles through a sunny County Antrim today. My part of of Ireland couldn’t have looked more beautiful.

Or more surprised…

Of course GB isn’t winning any medals at the Winter Olympics.

One plays to one’s strengths.

Now when they finally get around to introducing the Damp and Dreich Olympics, GB will dominate.*

Suggestions for events?

Thank you for alerting me, although I am 100% certain you meant an entirely different Will. And certainly not one in Europe.
