(I wasn’t there for these articles; I was reading some autobiographies of Graceland Cemetery people that are only at the archives and looked up some old time serial killer stuff for that tier of my Patreon while I was there). (And a book by Capone’s driver that is mostly about Jesus and Satan).

An editorial cartoon of a ship of “socialism” sailing to “truth, justice, and the people’s cause” as the socialists lost the 1912 election. One of the siloed has “socialist” on his butt.

(The worst of it today was a headline about how a “midget” act was the best thing in a blackface show. It had a photo. And that was in a socialist newspaper, which had some good cartoons and better news coverage than you usually get from papers that explicitly political).

But this western oil woman seems like quite a badass (until later on when she says women who don’t have kids shouldn’t get to vote)

It’s not hard to find articles like this in old papers but for some reason the Journal had a real penchant for it.

An article “hubby cooks, does washing.”

The Chicago Journal seemed to be very into these gender-based-1912-versions-of-ragebait headlines.

Today’s microfilm run was a big day for headlines like this:

Don’t remember when I last went to a Chili’s. I’d be tempted to keep it that way over the is but I believe they’re franchises, so I’m not sure it’s fair to blame other locations.

I looked up Archibald Butt last time I ran across these dates for the exact reason you’d expect.

Back on my bullshit at the microfilm room. Wasn’t looking up the Lusitania today but this the first thing I saw:

If you are attempting to dissect cultural trends between the 80s and today, I would argue that one of the most comprehensive resources you can find is the discography of "Weird Al" Yankovic

How does this guy even imagine SNAP works? Like, does he think it’s an unlimited card?

Remember when Trump said grocery stores would “work along” with you during the pandemic because they knew you?

These losers think they fuck with the eagles but real life would suck them dry.

Working on cleaning up links, gear, webpages, etc as the new tour season starts up. My “peeking out of a tomb” shot looks great in profile pics if I line it up correctly!

About 15 years ago a very vocal part of the YA community got downright militant about the idea that all books should be in first person present tense.

Cecil Beaton took this remarkable photo of Chicago socialite Mary Landon Baker looking like Norma Desmond (with whom I think she had a lot in common). Driving me crazy that I can only find this newspaper version of it!

He at least spent months pushing bullshit to convince people bombing Iraq was a good idea, instead of just… doing it because he was bored and not even bothering to come up with some coherent bullshit.

I’m really going to enjoy Markwayne’s eventual humiliation and disgrace. Few things make me happier than seeing evil rednecks wallowing in misery.

Debating whether I should do one of my own songs at the jazz bar tonight or attempt Tom Waits’ 1979 spoken word version of “Burma Shave” and damn I love living in this neighborhood.

(This is a problem with a lot of “demimonde” studies, though; if there’s a source at all it’s often someone whose middle name is “The.”)

Herbert Asbury is a pretty good overview of the same era as Low Life but, like his NY volume you have to take it with a whole shaker of salt.

A few of mine probably qualify, or look up Yellow Kid Weill’s autobiography (which is probably about as accurate as Devil in the White City, but you know what you’re getting with a swindler’s memoirs).
