Meteosat-12 captured a large dust plume visible over the Bay of Biscay and western Mediterranean this afternoon at 13:10 UTC. 🛰️

The dust is forecast to move west towards Italy and north towards the UK, we will keep an eye out from space. 👀

Warming atmosphere supercharging India’s monsoons. 🌧️

A 20-year satellite study led by EUMETSAT’s Dr Viju John shows deep convective clouds over India are increasing in altitude/number. As temps rise, extreme rainfall will become more common as warmer air holds more moisture.

In 2025 a toxic algal bloom hit southern California. 🛰️ data showed strong, cold upwelling bringing nutrient-rich water to the surface - fuelling the bloom.

The impact of sea breezes on mountains can be seen in this Met-12 Cloud Type RGB loop over the Al Hijaz Mountains in Saudi Arabia (19 Feb, 06:20-12:20UTC), via Ibrahim Mohammed Al-Abdul Salam (Oman Meteorology). The sea breezes come off the Red Sea & the moisture moves up the mountains.

Dust can travel thousands of km - reducing air quality and disrupting flights over land, but fertilising ocean phytoplankton that support marine food webs.
