PVs only work during daylight and add nothing in the winter so a complete waste of money and embedded carbon. They add zero to energy security as each MW they produce has to be backed up by gas. Simply virtue signalling. £67m paid to 1 turbine coy to keep them switched OFF!!
But it’s not very Green energy at all. The turbine blades will have to go to landfill, the embedded energy to construct the concrete bases and manufacture the turbines will never be offset. What’s green about that?

Out early 4 a quick trip to Rye Hbr before the dog walkers. 8 Wheatear, 1 Whinchat, 1 Barwit were the best. Then to the new sand pit at Scotney: Pec, Curlew, Green, Wood and Cmn Sandpipers, Greenshank, Ruff, Temminck’s Stint, Yellow Wags. Then ARC pit for 8 Garganey
Seaford Head and Hope Gap. A little group of 6 Willow Wblrs, and singles of Sedge Wblr and Nightingale was the best of the morning. Family parties of Cmn Whitethroat and Stonechat. 2 Adonis Blue. Buzzard sp 2 miles out over the sea on a thermal.
Baby hedgehog? Looks like it died overnight. I found it late afternoon after the ants had.
Exactly, you should do these things in any case. Thermal mass in older houses helps to maintain a balanced temperature throughout the year. Building Regs still don’t require sufficient insulation in new housing (nor include for swift or bee bricks as standard) and that should be the focus.
You don’t need Passivhaus in the UK. Scandinavia and Central Europe have a much wider range of temperature and they work fine there. Get good blinds and keep them shut during the heat of the day then open the windows in the evening to cool down. (40 years in construction)

Terrific finger post in Ashdown Forest this morning. Last year there was a small group of Violet and Broad-leaved Helleborines but this was all I found this morning. I suspect the deer have enjoyed the rest.
An enjoyable morning on Ashdown Forest. Terrific views of a pair of showy Redstarts, Cuckoo, Hobby but couldn’t find a Tree Pipit, although I heard a Pipit call when a raptor flew over but couldn’t find whether it was Tree or Meadow. Hobby nest located by calling chicks.
Final endemic that’s possible to see, Palila. Another species with collapsing numbers. Researchers caught their 800th feral cat whilst we were there, but a thrip is now destroying 1 of the 2 native tree species that it feeds on. 2 days in Honolulu now as a tourist.
Big Island. At last, a quality day of birding with some tricky to see endemics. Akiapolaao, Akepa, Creeper, “Hilo” form of Elepaio. BoC
Maui Amakihi, Apapane, Maui Alauahio (creeper) and the sole bird I managed to photo on Kauai Elepaio. All BoC. Head to Big Island tomorrow for 4 nights.
On Kauai Amakihi could not be found. This used to be an abundant bird. 😞
Such a contrast: Mauai has lower elevations so the endemic species can’t escape the malarial mosquitos whereas Maui is a much younger island and so higher and the endemics remain abundant. On Kauai there are only 11 Iiwi left. On Maui they are abundant in the right habitat.
Honolulu park. BC Night-heron, Red-crested Cardinal, White-rumped Shama, Java Sparrow and Zebra Dove pair. 18 species seen so far, only three are native.

An early afternoon trip to Weir Wood Resr was generally quiet with a few swallows, but looking for two Yellow Wags that had been seen earlier I refound the male Ring Ouzel that first arrived a few weeks ago, or, found another male RO in the same location as the earlier one. One for the recorders!
Henfield Levels were a new spot for me and really impressed by their ease of access and viewing as well as the numbers and variety of species seen this morning. The two Black-necked Grebes showed beautifully in the sunshine and my first singing Nightingale and Garden Warbler of the year were cool.

One of three Redstarts seen at Old Lodge this morning. This one did the decent thing and landed on a wire above my head. Lots of Willow Warblers singing. A lovely morning. BOC.

Hoopoes in East Sussex today
Seaford Head and Hope Gap. A pair of Wheatear was the highlight, the male in stunning spring plumage. Also Whitethroat and Blackcap in song and courting. 14 Skylarks and Mipits and Rock Pipits all displaying. A great walk.
This ewe’s twins are growing up fast!
