Chalkboard sign on a door with text "Taking a break!"
I'm moving house soon, which means everything here is going to be chaos for a while. So I'm taking a break from social media for the next couple of months.
In the meantime if you need to contact me, I won't respond to DMs or replies here - just email me directly at hello@tradescantia.uk.
Discount bags are now available for UK delivery! Each bag has a random selection of prunings from the National Collection of tropical Tradescantia (+ other Commelinaceae). Only available until stock runs out! π΄πͺ΄π±

It means a mutation which spontaneously arose on an existing plant - new variegated cultivars often start off as sport mutations, for example.
Getting this cultivar named was complicated. I've now published an article about the process for getting mystery plants named, so that it should be more predictable and transparent in future: tradescantia.uk/article/how-...
The results are in, and the new name for the mystery Callisia soconuscensis cultivar is... 'Quetzalcoatl'!
Here is the cultivar page with images and description: tradescantia.uk/cultivar/cal...

I've just got Callisia repens 'MaleΕ‘ice'βthought to be a sport of 'Rosato'. Mine quickly shifted from speckly to striped, while my 'Rosato' is speckly now. Are they really distinct? Anyone grown both?

This is a zebrina seedling that has extra petals! People don't generally grow zebrinas for their flowers, but maybe these flowers are interesting enough to be appealing?! What do you think?

Name that plant!
It's time for another cultivar naming survey, this time about the silvery-blue Callisia soconuscensis which has spread around the world in recent years. The survey will be open for about a week, or until responses stop coming in.

A lot of people worry about whether tradescantias can go outside because theyβre βhouseplantsβ in temperate climates. However, my outdoor and porch plants always end up growing bigger and stronger than the indoor ones.
For more, see my full article:
Tradescantia βNanoukβ and Tradescantia βLilacβ are particularly trendy cultivars with thick stems and tough, pink-striped leaves. But thereβs a lot of controversy and arguments about the plantsβ status and identity.

I'm thrilled to share my newest publication on dayflowers ( #Commelina, #Commelinaceae, #Commelinales). This article has a #SciComm and #PopCulture twist, where we honour @rebeccasugar.bsky.social and #StevenUniverse to highlight the importance of diversity (1/6)

Hairy green leaves of Tahitian Bridal Veil
Hairy green leaves of Tahitian Bridal Veil
I just noticed these bristly leaves on 'Tahitian Bridal Veil'. This makes me think that 'Jose Puig' could well be just a variation of G. pellucida rather than some other species or hybrid... π§
It's time for the last-week sale! Prices reduced by up to 50%, so grab them before they disappear.

The unnamed large form of Gibasis pellucida is so weirdly variable. Sometimes the leaves are wide and round, sometimes long and narrow, sometimes they're bright lime green, sometimes with purple in!

Me holding a container of Dichorisandra musaica, with a tall upright stem that goes over my head and big leaves at least 15cm long
It's so hard to judge the real size of Dichorisandra musaica just from looking at photos. At a glance it kinda just looks like a zebrina with long leaves. Here is a selfie for scale!

1 day to go! The Tradescantia Hub shop opens tomorrow, September 1st, for worldwide shipping.
If you have any questions, let me know. This is a very last-minute change, and it's possible things could even change again before it's actually time to export the international orders in October. I'll keep you updated on any developments.
Get ready to shop on 1st September!
Shipping to any destination outside the US is completely unaffected by this. As usual, if your local authorities need any import taxes, they'll contact you when the package reaches your country.
I can't make any guarantees about what your local authorities will do when the package arrives, but this is what UK authorities say is currently the correct process for exporters to follow.
You will still be able to order to the US. I'm required to charge the customs tariff before I ship. So the 10% tax will be added automatically at checkout when you enter a US shipping address.
