From personal experience, Northeastern’s rapid expansion was an administrative trash fire. My kid had a dozen swiftly rotating advisors over his time there, none of whom could explain graduation requirements or fixing problems with anything. Great teachers, awful administration.

Just so we're all clear, this is a war crime and would be punishable by life or death under U.S. law.

The Road to Prairieland The crackdown on anti-ICE activists in Texas reflects a pattern of intensifying repression all around the country.

Extremely grim news from Texas.

Absurdly, a jury has decided to convict all of the defendants on most of the charges, including "Corruptly Concealing a Document" for moving a box of zines.

The jury's verdict:

As a secrecy cheerleader, I'll point out that text threads and serial emails are *documents* and available through the public records act. Conflating records with meetings was a mistake that needed to be fixed.

Here we see the themes and motifs that resonate with me most deeply: difficult and weighty moral choices, strategic and tactical thinking, full-throated artistic expression, defense of that which needs and deserves defending, savage parody, things blowing up

Former JAGs question use of military lawyers to prosecute non-military crimes By assigning JAG to prosecute a civilian offense “devoid of a military nexus, the government has crossed a perilous line,” the complaint says.

Nearly a dozen former military lawyers filed a document in federal court Tuesday supporting the removal of an Army attorney who was appointed as the sole prosecutor in a case against a man accused of assaulting federal law enforcement officers in Minnesota.

I’ve been photographing anti-ICE and related yard/window/tree/street signs around Minneapolis. The variety of commercial and especially handmade signs is amazing, as is the urge for people to let their neighbors know they care and are furious in ways big and small. Batch #5

Its full-time director will serve as a counterweight to the U.S. solicitor general in federal criminal cases. The first will be former Kagan clerk and SG atty Ashley Robertson.

Did you know the City of Portland’s relatively robust lobbying regulations rely on self-reporting? Lobbyists are expected to register with the City, maintain records of their interactions with officials, and submit their records to the City. Not everything you might consider lobbying gets reported!

In the Shadows: Records Show Labor Leader’s Campaign to Influence City Councilors Labor Council Secretary Laurie Wimmer privately suggested councilors sue the city to stop “MAGA of the left” from choosing council president.

Note the level of back-channeling to try & keep someone in a role that is supposed to be a rotating thing (especially in a new form of government!) & keep out a truly great public servant like Sameer Kanal bc he believes in basic police oversight. there's so much bad in the world but there's also people who lift up and carry an elderly bat around every day so he can pretend he's flying again, and that's the part of the world I think is worth fighting for

Three doctors and a priest are wearing masks around an operating table during the Korean War.
One says, "Everybody knows war is hell.”
The second jokes, "Remember you heard it here last."
The third, Hawkeye, says, "War isn't hell. War is war and Hell is hell and of the two, war is a lot worse."
The priest asks, "How do you figure that, Hawkeye?”
“Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell?"
"Sinners, I believe.”
"Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. But war is chock full of them. Little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for a few of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander."

It’s still kind of shocking how good and adult a lot of 1970s American TV was, that a show like M*A*S*H was a massive hit without dumbing anything down. Not a lot of conversations like this on sitcoms now.
