"Thinking through the implications of 4C warming shows that the impacts are so significant that the only real adaptation strategy is to avoid that at all cost because of the pain & suffering that is going to cost. There is no science on how we are going to adapt to 4C warming" @neiladger.bsky.social
White background. “Big Tech often masks the climate impacts of Al by: [flying money emoji] Hiding emissions using creative accounting, such as buying certificates for renewable energy. [bubbles emoji] Overselling empty promises based on future technology. [emoji of person doing shush motion] Drip-feeding incomplete data to downplay the harmful effects of Al's insatiable appetite. [emoji of person shrugging] Claiming it's already too late to avoid responsibility. [person with invisible serious face] Setting ambitious climate targets with no real action to achieve them.” Footer line. “The new Al climate hoax is here. #BigTech frames AI as a climate solution.
But our new report takes off the rose-tinted smart glasses and shows a harsher reality: plenty of evidence that power-hungry generative AI is harming our planet, and little solid proof it can fight climate change.
They were going to pass rules to phase out gas stoves, until they received 20,000 public comments against the regulations. Except, oops, it turns out the comments were generated by AI.
March 1st is the Disability Day of Mourning, in memory of people with disabilities who were killed by family members or caregivers. At Rewire, we are committed to centering disability justice in our coverage. Thread below 🧵:
Sen. Tammy Duckworth just said on Colbert, "We should all live long enough to develop a disability," & the audience laughed uncomfortably.
I can tell you what they were thinking. It was "Not me. That would never happen to me."
& the underlying, unacknowlged premise was "b/c I'm better than that."
Genocide (which is what ICE are engaged in) is a disability justice issue #disability

Charlottesville is seeking volunteers to help remove snow and ice, esp. for folks who aren't able to do it themselves due to age, disability, etc.

"We can learn to design better, to listen better, to include better. The principle is simple. No one should have to fight for a seat at the table when the table belongs to all of us."
Our resilience is being tested from all sides, let's use every bit of creativity and interdependence we can.
The cruelty of this administration knows no bounds. It harms everyone, immigrant, disabled, parent, and child alike. All battles for human rights are connected. We must deconstruct false divisions and face state oppression with collective solidarity. #abolishICE

Following the violent assault of a disabled woman by ICE last week, and the many reports of abuses of people with disabilities in their concentration camps, it’s worth rereading this primer on Disability Criminalisation from the Center for Racial and Disability Justice
"more than 90 per cent of new renewable power is cheaper than building new fossil fuel plants. Investors see it. Governments see it. Communities feel it. Clean energy is faster to deploy, cheaper to run and more resilient in an increasingly volatile world."

Helping your disabled and elderly neighbors during big weather events is SO IMPORTANT
It's cold outside and snowy, too! Is climate change a hoax?
Not at all. Winter still brings cold weather even as the planet warms.
In fact, warmer oceans + a rapidly warming Arctic can even increase the intensity of winter storms and heavy snowfall.
That's why I call it Global Weirding!
"International law from below (...) can only emerge from counter-hegemonic practices – through social movements, indigenous resistance, labor struggles, environmental defense, and everyday transformations of power and rights within and across States, including at urban and local levels." 👇
Everyone, please check in on your ill, disabled, or elderly friends, family, neighbours, and coworkers, ideally BEFORE a storm hits your area. PWDs - take precautions for power outages, service disruptions, etc and share them with your support network. Be safe folks. www.cbc.ca/news/science...
Public transit infrastructure will not reach its full potential as a sustainable transportation solution if it is not accessible. If we're serious about reducing vehicle miles travelled, we can, and must, do better at providing safe, accessible, inclusive public transport systems!

Don't buy into the myth that "accessibility is only about adding alternative text to images." Alt text is important, of course. But there is so much more to accessibility, including headline structure, functional controls, color contrast, link text, plain language, and more.
NYC’s new mayor sees climate & affordability as a team play
Experts say clean energy, building electrification & coastal resilience can cut emissions and energy bills while tackling inequality. If done right, climate action could help make NYC more affordable #ClimateEconomy
They're trying to hide the cost.
The true cost of fossil fuels isn't at the pump. It's in hospital bills from polluted air, collapsed farms from drought, and trillion-dollar disaster recovery.
Renewable energy is the bailout we actually need.
