LET'S NOT PLAY FRISBEE WITH THAT POET ANYMORE.

[This is a comic strip, with a poem laid over it. On each panel a new line of the poem is written. The scene is a park, in the summer. A man in a trenchcoat - implicitly Philip Larkin - stands folorn, motionless, looking at people throwing a frisbee. It becomes apparent as the comic progresses that they are trying to play frisbee with him. He stand stock still for the whole comic, watching the frisbee as, panel by panel it soars closer and closer to him].

After contemplating the approaching frisbee for two silent panels, Philip begins his thoughts:

Unloosed, unheralded,
You soar toward me
Across the dying afternoon.

bright disc of childhood,
Long since thrown wide
Of Youth's green imaginings,

Your slow declining arc
Figures a sky-written truth:
We will all succumb, and soon

To earth's hard oblivion.

[The frisbee hits Philip on the head with a resounding DONK. He falls backwards, to the ground.

[Ends]

Yes, disability is definitely not a clear binary yes or no definition, much more about flexibility and meeting people's needs where they are at. It's not even a single continuum.

Short version: the world needs to just fucking believe people about what they need, and try to provide it the first time

It sucks and there are no good answers.

Except maybe to strive to make accessibility the default as far as possible, and to have a presumption that people are telling the truth, while accepting that this means maybe, occasionally, somebody gets help they don’t truly need. I’m ok with that.

Then more of the extra work Marie mentioned comes into play, as you have to put real effort into exactly how you present / explain yourself to professional gatekeepers. And often there is no correct answer.

Sadly in the real world this doesn’t work, because many disabled people find they are straight up disbelieved by some professionals. Lots of things don’t have clear tests or measurements you can use to prove it.

It’s a real roll of the dice whether you land on somebody who believes you.

Photograph of a suburban canal basin, taken from the towpath.

On the tarmac in the foreground somebody has spray painted the word "SWAN?".

Swimming in the canal basin behind it is a big white bird that is quite obviously a swan.

Photo of birds in a suburban canal basin, taken from the towpath.

On the tarmac in the foreground somebody has spray painted the word "SWAN?" in block capitals.

The head and neck of a swan are just visible over the wall of the canal bank. It has turned to stare at a duck that is swimming towards it.

The same scene, but this time a second swan has appeared, and they are looking at each other as if discussing the duck behind them.

I've explained this to you before Derek, those are ducks!

Why are you like this?

Oh maybe that’s what I was thinking of!

OK FINE I BOUGHT SOME. Harrumph.

And maybe some FP4 just in case there's a party or something

Honestly no promises though cos there isn't much capacity for photography right now but we'll see how it goes!

I'm tempted to pick up a roll in 120 and give it a try!

Would need to wait for the sun to come out at a moment when I happen to be up to doing some photography though so nobody hold your breath

Topaz Gigapixel turned out to be available in the Beta version of Photoshop so I tried it!

I think I'm going to go with the straightforward feature in Lightroom now that I've found it, but those people do seem to be correct that Topaz wins out of the AI models.

05.03.2026 23:10 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Re the 'Generative Upscale' models, Topaz Gigapixel seemed to do a much better job than Firefly Upscaler.

Firefly did some pretty wacky things with small background objects in places.

Topaz still has a v mild uncanny valley feel to it that means I preferred LR's straight up non-AI upscaling.

05.03.2026 23:06 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

OK I've tried a couple of options and my conclusions on this were:

Lightroom's 'Super Resolution' actually does a pretty good job and doesn't mess with stuff at all. Recommended πŸ‘

Photoshop (still in Beta) 'Generative Upscale' is decent but sometimes does mess with things.

Ahahah that guy is (bright blue) bananas in the best possible way πŸ˜†

He trichromed it!

Yep, this

I feel like I’ve seen somebody try it once with the Lomo one but I’m not sure who.

Maybe @simondiamond.bsky.social ? Or did I make that up?

05.03.2026 21:24 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

That's not a bad shout actually, it will definitely go through a wee round of test prints before I commit to a proper framed copy so I might print one version just as is and one embiggened one for comparison!

05.03.2026 18:05 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

...and that has embiggened it quite a lot without things looking too bad at all, thank you! πŸ‘

05.03.2026 18:03 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I realise the answer at this point might be 'lol good luck' πŸ˜†

The photo has strong sentimental value though so I think anything I can produce from it will hold a lot of meaning and nobody will see the limitations in quality but me. Probably shouldn't sweat it too much!

05.03.2026 17:52 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Currently 968x1296 pixels 😬

Looks like it was downscaled at some point in transit but there's no sensible way to retrieve the original file. Elderly relatives, taken on an iPad, photographer is deceased.

Brief is "a wee bit bigger" than 6x4" but it can be driven by what I'm able to get out of it

05.03.2026 17:50 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Brilliant, that's good to know! In that case this will be my first stop

05.03.2026 17:47 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I think it might, looking into it. I’m not opposed to AI upscaling, just making sure it’s enhancing resolution of the photo & restoring some detail without also β€œenhancing” the photo itself if you see what I mean.

It matters a lot that it stays the same as it’s a photo of a deceased relative.

05.03.2026 17:27 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Thanks, will take a look

05.03.2026 17:11 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

I suspect the answer is some sort of whizzy AI assisted upscaling but I definitely don’t want to end up with a Midjourney-ass yassified photo of my elderly deceased uncle

05.03.2026 17:08 πŸ‘ 4 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Photography question! Digital edition…

What’s the current best way to upscale a very low res old digital image for printing without AI just straight up messing with it.

I have up full featured / up to date Photoshop and Lightroom Classic at my disposal
