I remember too vividly going to a church service with my mom at some Baptist joint and eloping to the bathroom to cry because some old man was standing at the pulpit screaming red-faced about Hell and I thought, "Why does this man want to see us punished? And for what?"

I have since mostly repaired my relationship with faith, but in ways that would make a back-home neighbor's hair stand on end. Fuck them. Fuck them and their whole system and how they protect abusers and further abuse victims.

This attitude of victim-blaming and foisting shame on innocents for their own trauma is very common in evangelical Christianity, btw. I started deprogramming myself at a young age because I had an inkling of how wrong that was, to feel eternal shame for something out of my control.

Not only that, hate to get heavy, but I survived CSA & COCSA and purity culture further complicated my already complex trauma from that. Imagine being 7 years old and thinking you were dirty, alone, repulsive, & sinful for abuse that was perpetrated against you.

Church talk on the TL really does feel a certain way when you grew up queer and trans in the Bible belt, where people felt not only comfortable, but Called to fling slurs at you and call you a witch. You know how many times I was told I was going to Hell? Do you know what that did to me as a kid?
